Disturbance investigated in borough

State police at Frackville said they are investigating a disburbance that occurred in the Schuylkill County borough of New Philadelphia, about 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 29.

According to troopers an alleged assault occurred in the area of Valley St., near Water St. The circumstances and events leading up to the assault remain under investigation, troopers said, and additional interviews are anticipated. Troopers said at the conclusion of their probe the involved participants and circumstances surrounding the incident will be released to the media.

A published report claimed a large group of 20 or more persons were involved in the incident and that there were reports of several weapons involved, including knives, baseball bats and guns.

In a second press release from troopers they indicated a 17-year-old juvenile was knocking on doors in the area trying to find a friends' residence. An altercation became physical when a group of people near Mazlooms bar observed this and approached the juvenile. The juvenile was struck in the mouth by an unknown person dislodging a tooth.

Troopers later said that published reports concerning the size of the crowd and the weapons involved were exaggerated.
