Steven Wright brings laughs to Penn's Peak

An hour-and-a-half of non-stop laughter is what comedian Steven Wright delivered last night at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe.

Wright, a native of Boston, went through absurd story after story of life's typical events, putting a humorous twist on them.

Examples:

• I'm thinking of buying a plasma television - in case I need a blood transfusion.

• If heat rises, Heaven might be hotter than hell.

• I was caesarean born although you can't really tell. However, when I go out of the house, I go out through a window.

• I'm writing an unauthorized autobiography. When it comes out, I'm gonna sue myself.

• I went to a store. They had 2 percent milk. I asked, 'What's the rest of it?'"

Each joke was told in his trademark monologue. He wore his signature derby hat, a black sports jacket, and faded black jeans.

Wright, who has appeared on an HBO special and has been nominated for Grammys, has two CDs on the market: "I Have A Pony" and "I Still Have A Pony."

He told some jokes from those CDs and produced a lot of new material.

He jokes about a wide variety of topics: Getting arrested, his girlfriends, his childhood, shopping, general topics (Why are the pictures square if the lens is round?).

Besides his quips, he also sang several self composed - and humorous - songs.

The whole time on stage was spent telling jokes, and that was good.

At the end of the performance, he was rewarded with a well-deserved standing ovation.

Next up at Penn's Peak is Rusted Root on Saturday night, with the concert starting at 8 o'clock. Tickets are $24 in advance and $29 on the day of the show.

April Wine and Winger have a double-header concert on Friday, June 18, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this performance are $27 in advance and $32 on the day of the event.
