Updike places second at New Balance Nationals

Allison Updike of Tamaqua Area High School placed second in the scholastic javelin competition at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals track and field meet held at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro on Saturday.

Updike, who won the PIAA State Class AA javelin championship in May with a personal best throw of 161 feet, two inches, led the New Balance competition until the final throw. Her top throw was 154 feet even.

Hannah Carson of Chandler High School in Mesa, Arizona, won the competition at 160-4. Carson has the top scholastic outdoor throw in the country this year at 171-9, while Updike's 161-2 is ranked fourth, according to PennTrack.com.
