Mahoning accident victim remains in intensive care

Published March 04. 2010 05:00PM

A Lehighton man whose pick-up truck was T-boned by a sport utility vehicle in Mahoning Township Tuesday afternoon remains in the intensive care unit at St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem, hospital staff said early Thursday.

William Shipwash Sr., 67, was crossing Route 443 from Mahoning Mountain Road on a green light at 1:47 p.m. when James Barnett, 66, of Weldin Park Drive, Wilmington, Del., allegedly ran a red light and struck the driver's side of Shipwash's truck, launching it into the air. The truck landed on a guardrail and Shipwash was partially ejected.

Barnett was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where he was kept overnight and released Wednesday, hospital staff said. Barnett may face charges stemming from the accident pending completion of an investigation, Mahoning Township Police Chief Kenneth Barnes said.
