Program for Catholics
The three area Catholic churches will participate in "Encountering the Merciful Savior," an effort to increase the number of Catholics who receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Programs will take place on Tuesdays from 5-7 p.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Nesquehoning; Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and Fridays from 10-11 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Summit Hill; and on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and Fridays from 6-7 p.m. in St. Katharine Drexel Church, Lansford.

SH genealogy
Summit Hill residents having genealogy information that they wish to share with the Summit Hill Historical Society are invited to do so. The society maintains a "library" of information and is contacted "at least once a month" from persons seeking such information, according to society President Lee Mantz.
Member Carol Miller has conducted the research for inquiries.

Midweek service
The midweek Lenten service for the Lutheran community of the Panther Valley will be held Wednesday, March 10, in St. John Slovak Lutheran Church, Lansford. The evening will begin with a light supper of soup and sandwiches at 6 o'clock, followed by the worship at 7 o'clock.
The Rev. Fred Rogers, pastor of the Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church, Summit Hill, will speak on the "Lord's Prayer."
Heritage center
The Summit Hill Heritage Center, the former St. Paul United Church of Christ, is operated by a nonprofit organization and currently houses the Summit Hill Food Bank and serves as a meeting place for the local Boy Scouts and for yoga classes. Future plans include formation of a Girl Scout troop and the hosting of music programs, cultural events and fun nights for the young and old.
Garbage rates
Summit Hill Borough Council recently established new garbage rates for 2010. The cost per year is $210, however, homeowners who pay the annual fee, instead of quarterly, will receive a 5 percent discount of $10.50.
Residents opting to pay quarterly will receive four statements per year. Each will be $52.50.
