Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart.

Last week's meeting was attended by 64 members. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Hope For Tomorrow."

Dues for 2010 are now being accepted, with this year's current membership at 82. Vice President Doris Brobst reported that Sandy Scott was added to the sick list.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The meeting room is handicap accessible.

Writers conference

The Black Diamond Writers Network will conduct the region's first writers conference on April 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Schuylkill County Council for the Arts Center, 1440 Mahantongo St., Pottsville.

Keynote speaker will be Kathryn Crofy, owner of Writing-Partner.com. Her topic will be "Coming to Terms With Life: An Artist's Approach."

Day long events will also include eight workshops on writing-related topics as well as an author book fair.

St. Peter's

The Rev. Rodney Wells will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Girl Scout Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include a Joyous Noise Offering and will be followed by a fellowship hour. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation Class will meet at 1 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Monday, newsletter deadline; Tuesday, Daisy Scouts meet at 6:30 p.m., Women's Association of St. Peter's meets at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, midweek Lenten service, 7 p.m., Zion's Stone Church; Thursday, Prayer group meets at 5 p.m., Brownies meet at 6:30 p.m.

The choirs rehearse on Thursday. Next week's schedule will include: Cherubs at 6:30 p.m., Junior Choir at 7 p.m. and Senior Choir at 7:45 p.m.

Class of 1980

The Tamaqua Area High School Class of 1980 will meet today, at 7 p.m., to begin planning a 30th anniversary reunion. The meeting will be held at La Dolce Casa on West Broad Street, Tamaqua.

All class members are welcome to attend.

Calvary Methodist

The Rev. Brian Reading will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church, Lewistown Valley. A nursery room is available.

Also on Sunday, a time of evening praise and Bible study will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Next Wednesday's Lenten service will be held at Zion United Methodist Church, Reynolds, beginning at 7 p.m. with a hymn sing.

The annual Sunday school Easter program will be presented on March 28, at 6:30 p.m.
