March 11, 1940 Mauch Chunk Catholic captures the Anthracite Catholic Basketball League championship when Ashland Catholic refuses to play the deciding game of their three-game playoff series. The two teams split the first two games with the third contest scheduled for Liberty Hall in Tamaqua. Ashland attemps to get the third game postponed due to the illness of some of its players but Rev. Joseph Dougherty of Tamaqua, the president of the league, declares it's too late to postpone the game and awards the victory and the title to MCC.
