Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart.

Last week's meeting was attended by 76 members. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Peace."

Vice President Doris Brobst provided a report, noting that Senie Horan is recuperating at home; Sandy Scott has been hospitalized; and Jane Springer was added to the sick list. Secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld thanked Florina Martin and Jean Machamer for their assistance while she was on vacation. A thank you was offered to Roger Walck for the hard work he did on the bingo board.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The meeting room is handicap accessible.

SW news

The South Ward Neighborhood Committee will meet this Thursday, at 7 p.m., at 230 Race St. Guest speaker Tina Soley, of Schuylkill Community Action, will present a program on services available at the county level.

Jack and Jill

The Tamaqua YMCA's Jack and Jill Pre-School is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 school year. Preschool programs are open to children between the ages of 3-5. Four- or five-hour programs are available.

An open house will be held March 19, from 9-11 a.m., at the Tamaqua YMCA, located in the former Jamesway store.

Calvary Methodist

The Rev. Brian Reading will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church, Lewistown Valley. A nursery room is available.

Also on Sunday, a time of evening praise and Bible study will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Next Wednesday's Lenten service will be held at Immanuel Evangelical Congregational Church, Drehersville, beginning at 7 p.m. with a hymn sing.

The annual Sunday school Easter program will be presented on March 28, at 6:30 p.m.

St. Peter's

The Rev. Rodney Wells will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include special music by the Cherub Choir. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation Class will meet at 1 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, Daisy Scouts meet at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, midweek Lenten service, 7 p.m., St. Peter's Union Church; Thursday, Prayer group meets at 5 p.m.

The choirs rehearse on Thursday. Next week's schedule will include: Junior Choir at 7 p.m. and Senior Choir at 7:45 p.m.
