Kingdom Hall to be taken over by Access Services in Tamaqua
The Tamaqua Zoning Hearing Board unanimously approved a change of use permit for the former Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses, located at 523 Schuylkill Avenue.
Access Services is currently in the process of purchasing the property, with the intent of turning it into an adult day care facility.
William McMullen, a representative for Access, explained that the organization currently operates a facility based in the Salvation Army building on Broad Street and provides services for about 20 adults between the ages of 21-74. Although the new facility will require a new license, McMullen said that he has performed a cursory inspection.
"It's in very good condition. It's would be a perfect location," he said.
The facility is larger in square footage and will allow the group to expand their services to approximately 25 people. Additionally, there is adequate parking and unloading areas adjacent to the property and in a lot across the street, which the group is also purchasing.
Sheila Davison, the regional director for Access, explained that although they have been at their current location for nine years, there are issues, including parking availability and being located on the second floor of the building.
"This building better suits our needs," she said.
The group expects to acquire the property within a month.
"We're not making any changes, we can probably open about 10 days after we acquire it," said Davison.
Bill Delaurentis, a representative from the Jehovah's Witnesses explained that the church is not leaving the area.
"We're building locked and land locked. We've been there since 1965. Our congregation is growing and we just can't go anywhere," he said.
They have acquired acreage along Route 443 in West Penn Township and plan to build a new hall by this summer.
"I think they (Access) do a wonderful job. It's a wonderful service, and we are lucky to have them in the area," said Zoning Hearing Board member Christine Hartung.
