Bears open with softball victory

The Pleasant Valley softball team worked overtime in its season opener and came away with a victory over Freedom.

BASEBALL

Pius X-No. Lehigh

Northern Lehigh dropped a 7-3 non-league decision to Pius X in its season opener.

George Delesandro, Justin Mazza and Scott Douglas had two hits for the Royals.

For Northern Lehigh, Brody Minnich had a triple and an RBI, Matt Gill singled home a run, and Kirk Bender added a double.

Pleasant Vy.-Freedom

The Patriots put up three runs in the second inning and never looked back as they shut out the Bears 5-0 in a non-league contest.

Greg Taylor fired a two-hitter for Freedom, striking out three and walking two to get the win.

T.J. Luddy had two hits to lead the Patriots, while Drew Borger and Kershner had the only hits for the Bears.

Pat Kregeloh piched four innings and got the loss despite not giving up an earned run.

SOFTBALL

Pleasant Vy.-Freedom

The Lady Bears and Patriots went 10 innings with PV earning a 7-3 non-league win.

Kasey Meckes went 2-for-5 and scored two runs for the Bears, while Megan Hardy had two hits and scored two runs. Rachel Sisco had two singles and two RBIs.

Meagan Fitzgerald was the winning pitche, striking out four and walked two.

TENNIS

Lehighton-Stroudsburg

The Indians could only manage a doubles win in a 6-1 Mountain Valley Conference loss to the Mountaineers.

James Sverchek and Nick Mantz combined for the lone Lehighton win as they defeated Nate King and Brandon Clark 8-1 in a pro set.

Salisbury-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe remained unbeaten in regular season play by posting a 5-0 victory over visiting Salisbury on Thursday.

Sam Lux, Zach Ligenza and James Denny swept singles' play for the third straight match this week.

The Olympians are now 3-0 on the season.
