Business women

The Tamaqua Business and Professional Women's Club held its May meeting at La Dolce Casa in Tamaqua. Special guest Sgt. 1st Class Paul Shutter of the Hometown unit of the Pennsylvania National Guard provided a brief history of the guard, the many changes made over the years and current guard operations. Sgt. Shutter also spoke of the guard's enlistment requirements and the varied duties performed by its members, including assisting in national and international disasters.

President Mary Bridygham conducted the business meeting. Members were reminded of several upcoming events, including the State Convention, June 11-12, in Blairsville.

The next meeting of the local BPW chapter will be held June 1. For further information, contact Bridygham at (570) 668-3008.

Gardening help

Penn State Master Gardeners hosts a gardening helpline, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Monday and Wednesday through Sept. 29, as well as conducting workshop sessions to help area residents.

Recycling

Wednesday is the day for curbside recycling pickup for all residents of Tamaqua.

All recyclable items must be placed in the containers issued to each borough household. Any other containers, such as plastic bags and cardboard boxes, will be emptied and left behind.

Anyone who needs a recycling container may contact borough hall at (570) 668-3444.

Collection bins for cardboard have been moved to the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Treatment Plant Road.

Collection bins for newspaper can be found at the Tamaqua Borough Garage on East Broad Street.

TOPS news

The Tamaqua Chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets every Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m., in the Tamaqua Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St. The meeting includes a short business session and a program.
