Traffic problems in Palmerton alleys
Dear Editor:
The traffic in the borough alleys has become horrendous especially the alley in between the 500 block of Delaware and Lehigh Avenue. What is borough council thinking? A person having a garage or off street parking behind their home is taking their life in their hands trying to get in and out of their garage or parking space.
That alley has become a major highway. Employees fly in there in the morning and out at 5 p.m. You cannot even get into the alley going east at 5 p.m. Then add to that equation the people who feel the can fly through the alley faster than going down Delaware Avenue when traffic is congested.
Safety is an issue here. What is council thinking by adding more traffic in that alley? Has anyone of them tried getting in that alley at 5 p.m. let alone try to back into a parking space? One needs to back in because if you back out, you are sure to get hit. I am sure the alley between the 500 block of Delaware and Franklin Avenue is getting to be the same way.
Years ago, I made a suggestion to the borough manager about making the alley one-way for safety reasons, and the fact that when there is a sizable snow, the alley is only travelable one-way. Two cars cannot get through at the same time and someone has to back up. There are still young children playing in the backs of some of those homes and the way people fly through the alley someone is going to get hit either trying to exit a garage, a parking space, a child running after a ball or a pet that happens to inadvertently get loose.
Aren't the homeowners being given any consideration here? Not everyone can afford to move to another location. We deserve to have our safety taken into consideration.
