Garden club
The South Schuylkill Garden Club will hold its next meeting on May 18, at 6:30 p.m., at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Dock Street, Schuylkill Haven. The theme will be "Wonderful African Violets." Guest speaker will be Marge Coffin, a Schuylkill County Master Gardener. She will share tips on growing and propagating African Violets. Each attendee will receive a slip of violet.

The South Schuylkill Garden Club is a member of District II/III of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania and the National Garden Clubs Inc.
Class of 1943
The Tamaqua High School Class of 1943 is planning a reunion picnic for its 67th anniversary. The event will be held June 19 at the Owl Creek Reservoir Pavilion, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The menu will include traditional picnic items such as hamburgers, hot dogs and assorted soft drinks. No alcoholic beverages will be allowed.
Reservations are now being accepted, with a deadline of May 19.

Red Cross
The Schuylkill/East Northumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting on June 14. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Harry's Grill, 14 N. Market St., Shamokin, and will include an election of board members.
Anyone who has donated blood, contributed funds or volunteered in the past year is considered a member and is welcome to attend.
Pre-registration is required and may be made by calling (570) 622-9550 or send an e-mail to redcrossed@comcast.net. Deadline for registration is 2 p.m. on June 11.
Council meeting
Tamaqua Borough Council's next meeting will be held Wednesday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. The change in schedule is due to the May 18 Primary Election.
Prior to the meeting, a second hearing will be held on potential uses for funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, including an additional $13,000. That hearing will begin at 7 p.m.
Both meetings will be held in the council chambers of borough hall, 320 E. Broad St., Tamaqua. The public is welcome to attend.
Freshmen orientation
Tamaqua Area High School Principal RuthAnn Gardiner announces a Freshman Orientation will be held for students and parents of incoming freshman for the 2010-11 school year. The orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19, at 7 p.m., in the Tamaqua Area School District Auditorium.
Praise event
Tamaqua Youth Ministries will perform a Praise Event May 19, at 6:30 p.m., at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, 223 E. Broad St. Light refreshments will be served.
