May 26, 1951 Lehighton's Lamont Smith captures a gold medal in the state track and field meet at Penn State by winning the mile. Competing in Class A, Smith betters the district mark (4:35.2) he set a week earlier by breaking the tape in a time of 4:30. The Indian runner is the only District 11 athlete to take a first at states. Summit Hill's Dick Rosser also brings home a medal, taking third place in the Class B high jump.
