Jim Thorpe gets first volleyball win

Tamaqua rallied past North Schuylkill and Jim Thorpe posted its first victory of the season to highlight scholastic volleyball action on Monday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

Tamaqua dropped the first game only to recover and win the next three to post a 22-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-10 Schuylkill League victory over visiting North Schuylkill.

The Blue Raiders' Sarah Lesisko finished with 19 service points, 10 aces and three kills. Stacey Wallace contributed seven service points, six aces, three kills and three blocks, and Sarah Paluck added 10 service points, seven kills and one ace in the win.

In the JV game, North Schuylkill won in two games.

Jim Thorpe-Williams Vy.

Jim Thorpe picked up its first win of the season, defeating Williams Valley, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 15-6, in a non-league match.

Brittany Holland had a huge performance at the net with 15 kills for the Olympians. Amanda Petrin was the defensive star with 15 digs while setter Lauren Mason had 27 assists.

In the JV match, Williams Valley was a 25-21, 23-25, 25-17 winner.

Pleasant Vy.-Whitehall

Whitehall handed Pleasant Valley a non-league setback, 25-13, 25-16, 25-17.

Breanna Joseph had a career high 10 blocks and also added five kills for Pleasant Valley. Kayla Dorney added three kills and two blocks for the Bears while Brittni Cumberland had eight assists.

PM East-Lehighton

Pocono Mountain East swept Lehighton, 25-18-25-10, 25-22 in a Mountain Valley Conference match.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lehighton-ES North

Lehighton used a strong second half to post a 4-2 Mountain Valley Conference win over East Stroudsburg North.

Jordyn Homyak led the Indians' attack with two goals, while Rachel Werley and Sarah Keer added single scores. Teammate Kasey Beck was credited with an assist.

The Indians' goalkeeper Kristina Schnell finished with two saves.

Lehighton improves to 9-2 overall and 8-0 in the MVC. ES North slips to 5-8 and 3-5.

Bangor-No. Lehigh

Steph Hahn scored with 10 minutes remaining in sudden death overtime to give Bangor a 2-1 Colonial league victory over Northern Lehigh.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Bulldogs, who rallied to tie the game on a Lauren Zellner goal with just :28 remaining in regulation.

Bangor had a 16-6 advantage in shots. Goalie Nicole Horn had 14 saves for the Bulldogs (6-4, 6-6).

No. Schuylkill-Jim Thorpe

John Chernewski scored a hat trick to lead North Schuylkill to a 5-0 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Justin Kaminski had 27 saves in goal for the Olympians.

Lehighton-ES North

East Stroudsburg North got the best of Lehighton for a 6-1 Mountain Valley Conference win.

Alvaro Montoya led the Timberwolves with two goals, while Ricky Johnson chipped in with a goal an assist.

Austin Schlosser notched the Indians' lone goal in the second half. DJ Rossino tallied the assist.

Shane Fordyce finished with 15 saves in front of the Indians' net.

Northwestern-No. Lehigh

Three different players had multiple goal games as Northwestern rolled to a 7-2 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

James Hoover, Isaiah Danner and Nick Misera all scored twice for the Tigers. Jeremy Ettl added one goal.

For Northern Lehigh, Channing Shiffet and Jimmy Bilger scored goals.

Northwestern had a 25-20 advantage in shots. Tiger goalie Talon Williams made 18 saves.

CROSS COUNTRY

Palmerton-NDES-NDGP-Wilson-Bangor-Salisbury-Pen Argy-Moravian A.

Palmerton took part in a Colonial League showdown at Moravian Academy.

Both the Bombers and the Lady Bombers finished with 3-4 marks on the day.

The Bombers' Andrea Stevko crossed the finish line in a time of 21:21 which was good enough for a seventh-place finish.

Aaron Papay paced the Bombers with an eighth-place finish in a time of 17:52.

Zach Coleman's 21-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter accounted for all the scoring as Lehighton edged Pocono Mountain East, 7-0, in a Mountain Valley Conference game.
