Olympians, Bears pull off sweeps

Both Jim Thorpe and Pleasant Valley had perfect days in multi-team cross country meets on Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Panther Valley-Shenandoah Valley-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe's cross country teams combined to go 4-0 in its tri-meet with Panther Valley and Shenandoah Valley.

Kayla Susko led the Lady Olympians (6-2) with a first-place finish. She came in with a time of 22:15, 24 seconds ahead of Panther Valley's Sindle Griffiths. Jim Thorpe's Erin Bucci, Catherine Condly and Sandra Kimborwicz rounded out the top five.

Although Shenandoah's Steve Dziedziak won the boys' race, Jim Thorpe (7-1) still both of its matches. The Olympians had seven runners finish second through eighth. They were Josh Williams, Chris Boyd, Adam Dachowicz, Matt Curran, Zach Nace, Christian Field and Nathan Flick.

The Panthers' highest finisher was Austin Karnish in 13th.

Lehighton-Pleasant Vy.-Stroudsburg-PM East-PM West

Pleasant Valley and Lehighton took to the terrain at Pocono Mountain West for a Mountain Valley Conference meet.

The Bears ran away with a sweep with a 6-0 mark on the day, while the Indians suffered the effects of being swept (0-4).

Dana McAllister and Sam Klinger paced the Lady Bears finishing second and third, while teammate Stacy Wojy (fifth) and Kaitlyn Smith (sixth) rounded off with top-10 finishes. The Indians' Emily Oldt finished in 14th.

Dan Rose (second) and Alex Larkin (fifth) posted top-five finishes for the Bears, while Thomas O'Leary (seventh) and Tim Landes (eighth) added spots in the top-10. The Indians' Dave Magyar crossed the finish line in 16th.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lehighton-ES South

Echo Bretz's two goals and three assists highlighted Lehighton's 6-1 Mountain Valley Conference win over East Stroudsburg South.

The Indians' Sarah Keer followed suite with a goal and an assist, while Kenzie Teno, Rachel Werley and Kaycie Andrew all added single goals.

Kacey Beck and Jordyn Homyak contributed with assists.

Nicole Eck posted the Cavaliers' lone goal in the second half.

Kristina Schnell grabbed five saves in front of the Indians' net, while her counterpart ended up with 13.

Lehighton remains unbeaten in MVC play at 9-0 and move to 11-2 overall.

Palmerton-Bangor

North Division front runner Bangor gets the best of Palmerton for a 5-0 Colonial League shutout victory.

Haley Martin led the Slaters with two goals, while Abigail Bakke chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Emily Howell and Christelle Reglas added single scores, while Melissa Fornaro was credited with two assist.

Palmerton slips to 3-9 overall and 2-8 in the league, while Bangor improves to 11-2 (9-2 CL).

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Hayley Williams's two first-half goals helped spark Pleasant Valley to a 5-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain West.

The Bears' Kristin Hart and Dominique Kindt added first half goals, while Felicia Domenici recorded the lone second half goal.

Hannah Bard (no saves) and Kennedy Sheeley (two saves) split time in front of the PV net to share the shutout victory.

BOYS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Tamaqua scored three unanswered goals to come from behind and beat Jim Thorpe, 4-2 in Schuylkill League soccer.

Trailing 2-1, Gonzalo Cascante scored three straight goals for the Raiders. He scored twice late in the first half within three minutes of each other. He netted the hat-trick early in the second. Teammate Jake Fegley had the team's first goal.

Jim Thorpe's two goals were scored by Matt Rich and Corey Ligenza respectively.

ES South-Lehighton

Lehighton scored the first three goals of the game and went on to defeat East Stroudsburg South, 3-1 in MVC play.

Jason Addy scored twice in the first half for the Indians (4-9, 2-8). Teammate DJ Rossino added a third goal early in the second half.

Shane Fordyce made 11 saves in net for the locals.

GIRLS TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Notre Dame (ES)

Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg needed just three matches to knock off Jim Thorpe, 3-0 in non-league tennis play.

Two matches, both the No. 3 singles and the No. 2 doubles, were unable to be finished because of rain.

The Olympians finish the year with a 5-11 record.
