Wreckers clinch D-11 volleyball berth

Weatherly and Tamaqua posted key volleyball victories to highlight Monday's scholastic sports action.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Pleasant Vy.-Liberty

Pleasant Valley dropped a non-league match to Liberty, 22-25, 25-21, 11-25, 21-25

Kayla Dorney played well at the net for the Bears (14-6) with 12 kills and two blocks. She also added five digs on the back line.

Also having strong matches for PV were Brittni Cumberland (17 assists, 10 digs); MacKinzie Dorney (22 digs, three kills); Crystal Cambria (four kills, three aces, two blocks); Breanna Joseph (eight kills); and Andre Giardina (eight digs, two aces).

Weatherly-Jim Thorpe

Weatherly's volleyball team clinched a District 11 playoff berth for the first time in history by beating Jim Thorpe, 25-12, 25-12, 25-22.

Sarah Dolinsky and Brittany Hinkle led the Wreckers (10-4, 4-4) in kills with four. Dolinsky also had six digs, three aces and two blocks.

Teammate Rachel Heister helped out with 13 assists.

Weatherly's JV also won, 25-21, 25-22.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Tamaqua posted an important 25-16, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21 Schuylkill League victory over Division II leader Pine Grove.

The victory keeps the Raiders (8-2 league) just a half game behind Pottsville in the Division 1 standings.

Paige Baddick led Tamaqua with nine service points and 19 assists. Also playing well were Sarah Paluck (nine service pints, seven kills, two digs); Stacey Wallace (three service points, eight kills, two blocks) and Kelsey Burkett (two service points, six kills).

Pine Grove is now 8-2 in league play.

Tamaqua won the JV match, 2-1

No. Schuylkill-Panther Vy.

North Schuylkill swept Panther Valley, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22, in a Schuylkill League match.

Chrissy Micholik had five kills and five service points for the Panthers (6-6, 5-5). Amy Yusella and Diane Focht added five and two kills respectively.

In the JV match, North Schuylkill posted a 25-20, 25-20 victory.

BOYS SOCCER

Bangor-Northern Lehigh

Bangor posted a 5-2 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh in a game that was called in the second half because of bad weather.

Jonah Ruggiero had a hat trick for the Slaters.

The Northern Lehigh goals were scored by Carson Groller and Thatcher George.

Northwestern -Pen Argyl

Northwestern beat up on winless Pen Argyl and went on to post a 5-1 victory in Colonial League soccer action.

The Tigers (10-3-1) received goals from Jeremy Ettl, Isaiah Danner, Kyle Sorensen, Kyle Willis and Curtis Cappuccino. Danner also had two assists, while Ettl had one.

Palmerton-Notre Dame ES

Adam Berger's second half goal propelled Palmerton to a 1-0 win over Colonial League foe Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg.

The Bombers out-shot the Spartans 11-6 for the game.

Palmerton goalie Brett Snyder made six saves en route to the shutout.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Tamaqua jumped ahead of Pine Grove 2-0 before the game was suspended with 13 minutes left in the first half. The game will be resumed on Saturday.

FIELD HOCKEY

Northern Lehigh-Wilson

Northern Lehigh blanked Wilson on the road Monday afternoon, winning 3-0 in Colonial League play.

Kristi Seiler, Kelsey Follweiler and Shannon Weil each had goals for the Lady Bulldogs (8-7).

Nicole Horn, Northern Lehigh's goalkeeper, had to make just one save on the day.

GIRLS TENNIS

Northampton-Tamaqua

Northampton swept Tamaqua 5-0 in a non-league match.

Darby McCall, Brittany Hodge and Madi McCall all won their respective singles matches in straight sets.

That can also be said for the Kids' double teams of Nicole Sharga/Ashley Gidner and Avery McCall/Maureen Weaver.
