Indians, 'Dawgs pick up field hockey wins

Lehighton and Northern Lehigh picked up field hockey victories to continue their league winning ways in local scholastic action on Tuesday.

In other action,

FIELD HOCKEY

PM West-Lehighton

The Lady Indians continued to dominate their opponents in the MVC, as they defeated Pocono West, 5-0.

Echo Bretz led the way individually for Lehighton (13-3, 11-0) with two goals and an assist. Teammate Kaycie Andrew had a goal and assist in the win.

Also for the Indians, Haley Coleman and Sam Shenton had goals with Gwen Remaley, Kenzie Teno and Jordyn Homyak all chipping in with assists.

Pleasant Vy.PM East

The Cardinals used two goals and an assist from Ally Roth to hand the Bears a 4-1setback in MVC play.

Haylee Murtha and Mariah Sundberg scored the other two goals for the winners. Felicia Domenici scored for the Bears off an assist from Alura Bellis.

Hannah Bard had eight saves in goal for the Bears, while the Cards' Cheyenne Kimble had 11.

Pleasant Valley is now 7-4 in the MVC, while Pocono Mountain East is 6-5.

Catasauqua

-No. Lehigh

The Lady Bulldogs produced another valiant effort to take a 2-0 win over Catasauqua.

After Payton Marunich took a feed from Rachel Wagner in the first half to give her team a 1-0 lead at the break. On the Bulldogs second half goal Wagner assisted teammate in Alisha Bowers.

NL held a 14-2 edge in shots.

In the JV contest, Catty posted a 2-1 win.

Bangor-Northwestern

The Lady Slaters shutout and shut down the Tigers to power through to a 4-0 Colonial League win.

After Northwestern trailed only 1-0 at the break, Haley Martin scored two goals in the second to put things away.

Bangor outshot Northwestern 17-6 in the game, with the Tigers Sam Rex stopping 13 shots on goal.

Palmerton-Pen Argyl

The Lady Bombers came out and scored the first goal of this Colonial League field hockey matchup, only to see host Pen Argyl go on a four-goal scoring spree and post a 4-1 win.

Morgan Myers' first half goal opened up the scoring only to see her team go dry the rest of the way.

PHS' Lydia Anthony had five saves in goal.

Pen Argyl had a slim 9-6 shot advantage in the contest as it improved to 7-10 on the season.

GOLF

MVC TOURNAMENT

Stroudsburg continued its stranglehold on Mountain Valley Conferenc golf as it won the Tournament Championship for the fifth straight year.

Chance Snyder shot a tournament-best 73 to lead the Mounts to a 494 score at Great Bear Country Club.

The Mounts (494) won by 39 strokes over second-place East Stroudsburg South (533). Pleasant Valley was third (545).

BOYS SOCCER

PM West-Lehighton

Mike Tarvin scored with just 5:27 remaining in the game to lift Pocono Mountain West to a 3-2 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lehighton.

D.J. Rossino and Luke Millen had goals for the Indians while Anthony Rossino and Jason Addy picked up assists.

Both teams had 14 shots. Lehighton goalie Shane Fordyce made 10 saves.

The Indians dropped to 2-10 in MVC play and 4-11 overall. The Panthers are 5-5 in the MVC and 8-8 overall.

Tamaqua-Nativity

Tamaqua downed host Nativity 4-0 in a Schuylkill League contest.

Gonzalo Cascante led the way for the locals with two goals and an assist. Teammates Jake Fegley and Cesare Picone added lone goals in the win.

Tamaqua outshot Nativity 15-4 in the contest.

In the JV game, Nativity posted a 1-0 win.

Tamaqua-Catasauqua

In a game from Monday night, Catasauqua downed the Blue Raiders, 1-0.

Catty's Zach Pattison scored the lone goal with 5:27 remaining in the game to seal the deal.

For the Raiders, Zack Lakistky stopped six shots in goal.

Tamaqua actually held the edge in shots, 9-8.

Catty also won the JV contest, 2-0.

GIRLS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

The Olympians and Crimson Tide battled to a 1-1 tie through double overtime in Schuylkill League play.

Caitlin Liscinski scored for the Olympians off a Cat Condly assist, while Dalton had the Pottsville goal.

Chelsea Smelas had 10 saves in goal for Jim Thorpe.

Tamaqua-No. Schuylkill

Tamaqua (14-2-1) used its high powered offense for a convincing 8-2 win over the Spartans.

Ali Updike tied a school record by scoring four goals. Lauren Mateyak scored twice and Kailee Rottet and Brianne Curvey adding goals for the Raiders. Kailee Rottet had three assists and Alex Wagner added two as the Lady Raiders ended up with 40 shots on goal.

Diane Lindenmuth and Kendall Devany recorded goals for North Schuylkill.

Chey Bates had 15 saves in goal for the Raiders. Tamaqua made it a sweep with a 5-1 JV win with Kaleigh Rabenold scoring twice along with goals from Brynn Lehatto, Avery Banavage and Amanda Hinkle.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Pine Grove

-Panther Valley

Pine Grove rallied for a 19-25, 27-29, 25-15, 25-18, 15-11 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

The Panthers (6-7, 5-6) got outstanding play at the net from Chrissy Micholik (11 kills); Amy Yusella (11 kills, five blocks); and Deanna Focht (eight kills, six blocks). Leading the way at the service line were Celene Yelito (12 points); Jacinda Ruzicka (11 points, four aces); Micholik (nine points); and Sarah Branchide (eight points). Yelito also had 18 assists.

In the JV match, Panther Valley posted a 25-7, 25-16 win.

PM West

-Pleasant Valley

The Lady Bears remained undefeated in Mountain Valley Conference by downing Pocono Mountain West in straight games, 25-6, 25-16, 25-13.

Leading the way for the Bears (9-0 MVC) was Brittni Cumberland with 19 assists, four kills, three aces and two blocks. Meanwhile, Crystal Camria had seven kills and Kayla Dorney added six kills and three digs.

Also for the Bears, Breanna Joseph and MacKinzie Dorney added six and five kills, respectively.

Mahanoy Area

-Weatherly

Weatherly dropped the first game, but recovered to win the next three and score a 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17 Schuylkill League win over Mahanoy Area.

Rachel Heister led the Wreckers' attack with 35 assists and five digs, while Brittany Hinkle chipped in with 16 kills, six digs and seven blocks.

Sarah Dolinsky (10 kills, eight digs, two aces), Alyssa Kephart (seven kills, seven digs, three blocks) and Alicia Panzarella (seven digs) contributed some fine numbers.

Weatherly improves to 11-4 overall and 5-4 in the SL.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Pottsville held together and played hard to down the Lady Raiders, 25-15, 25-22, 15-25, 32-30, in a matchup of Schuylkill League Division I contenders.

Paige Baddick led the way for the Raiders with 14 assists, while Stacey Wallace had seven aces, four kills and three blocks. Also for Tamaqua, Sarah Paluck had six kills and teammate Sarah Lesisko had four kills and two aces.

Pottsville also won the JV contest, 2-0.

Marian-Shenandoah

The Fillies ran their record to 10-0 with wins at Shenandoah Valley by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-11.

Tori Vadyak had five kills, one dig and two blocks, Kathleen Reilly had six kills, Marykate Sherkness had 14 kills, two aces and three digs, Taylor Mele had four kills, three aces and 12 digs, Rachel Krajcirik two kills, 25 assists and four aces, Cathleen Cataldo added two aces and 16 digs and Katelyn Collevechio had three assists, three aces, five digs and 15 service points for Marian.

The Marian JV's also won by scores of 25-17, 25-11.

CROSS COUNTRY

Pleasant Valley-

Stroudsburg

The Mounts edge the Bears in the boys meet 27-28, while the Bears managed a 25-31 win on the girls side during a MVC meet.

Stroudsburg's Mark Pfaeffle (17:12) was the race winner, while Pleasant Valley's. Dan Rose came in second place with a time of 17:24.

Stroudsburg's Kiana Tucker won the girls race in 20:26 and was followed by the Bears' Samantha Klingel (20:55) and Dana McAllister (21:06).

The Indian boys picked up a split against the Cavaliers and Timberwolves, while the girls lost to Es North.

Kennard Wilson of ES South had the best time with a 19:15. Lehighton's Dave Magyar and Daulton Radler finished 3-4 with times of 20:04 and 20:06.

Emily Oldt of Lehighton had the best time with a 23:52 run against the Timberwolves, but the latter's depth took over as they won by a 15-50 score.

Tamaqua-PM West

The Lady Raiders had a tough time with host Pocono Mountain West, as the Lady T-Wolves rolled to a 6-1 in non-league win.

The sole victory for Tamaqua came at number four doubles, where the team of Sarah Zoba and Vicky Krause took down Lauren Morales and Christina Madejyck in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
