Tigers close in on D-11 berth

The Northwestern field hockey team closed in on a District 11 playoff berth by defeating Northern Lehigh on Saturday.

FIELD HOCKEY

No. Lehigh-Northwestern

Northwestern edged Northern Lehigh, 2-1, in Colonial League action.

All the scoring took place in the second half as the Tigers pulled out to the lead with Caileigh Ladrigan scoring unassisted.

Sara Jones put in an insurance score with 2:50 left in the game off a Lauren Horner feed.

With 46 seconds remaining in the contest, Alisha Bowers got NL off the schnide, scoring unassisted.

Both squads had five shots on goal in the tight contest. NW's Sam Rex stopped four shots in goal.

The Tigers (8-7-1, 7-7-1) need a win or a tie in either of their two remaining games Catasauqua and Freedom to clinch a District 11 playoff berth.

GIRLS SOCCER

Weatherly-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe did all its scoring in the first half on its way to a 3-1 non-league win over Weatherly.

Caitlin Liscinski opened things up with a goal off a feed from Kristin Lawrence. Lawrence scored off a Liscinski assist shortly afterwards. Cat Condly took a pass from Jeanna McElmoyle and scored the final Olympian goal.

Dougherty added a second half score to prevent shutout for the Lady Wreckers.

Jim Thorpe outshot Weatherly, 16-7. The Olympians' Chelsea Smelas stopped four shots.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

In the continuation of a suspended game from last week, Tamaqua breezed to a 5-0 Schuylkill League victory.

Kailee Rottet's two goals were preceded by a score from Taylor Gerber as the Raiders built a 3-0 lead early in the second half. Seniors Natalie Davison and Hailey Arnold scored goals late in the game to close out the scoring.

Tamaqua outshot Pine Grove 15-4. Chey Bates had three saves in goal for her seventh shutout of the year.

The Raiders improved to 15-2-1 on the season.

Tamaqua won the JV game, 1-0.

BOYS SOCCER

Dieruff-Lehighton

Lehighton unloaded on Dieruff as it rolled to a 7-0 win.

Anthony Rossino, DJ Rossino and Jason Addy all scored two goals for the Indians. Luke Millen added a sole goal in the game for the final score.

LHS outshot Dieruff 17-5 in the game. The Indians' Shane Fordyce stopping five shots.

No. Lehigh-Palmerton

The Bulldogs showed how big their bite was with a 5-2 Colonial League win over Palmerton.

Jimmy Bilger and Aaron Harding both scored twice with Tyler Hoppes adding one.

Adam Berger had two goals for Palmerton. Trevor Sherman assisted on both goals.

NL outshot Palmerton 26-22 in the game. The Bulldogs' Justin Molitoris had 11 saves while Brett Snyder made 15 for Palmerton.
