A Schuylkill County resident was jailed early Sunday morning for assaulting a young girl. State police at Frackville said the incident occurred about 12:40 a.m. outside 33 S. Main St., Shenandoah.

Troopers on patrol observed a male grabbing a young female and putting her in a choke hold while forcing her into a parking lot. Troopers took the male into custody and identified him as Artemio Santis-Cruz, 24, of Shenandoah. Troopers said he resisted them when they attempted to take him into custody.

The female, age 14, told troopers she did not know the suspect. She also said when he choked her he also touched her breasts.

Cruz was arraigned on two counts of indecent assault and one count each of simple assault, resisting arrest and public drunkenness. He was committed to the county prision after failing to post $20,000 bail. Troopers said it was further learned that Cruz was in the country illegally. Immigration authorities were notified and they placed a detainer against him.
