Bears roll to 55-0 victory

HONESDALE - Pleasant Valley suffered a lopsided loss last week in its regular season opener against Nazareth.

However, it didn't take the Bears long to bounce back. On Friday night, Coach Jim Terwilliger's squad traveled to Honesdale for a non-league battle with the Hornets...a game the visitors dominated from start to finish.

"We kind of took one on the chin from Nazareth," he said just moments after the final gun sounded on a 55-0 rout of Honesdale.

"But, we made a step in the right direction here tonight. There are definitely some things we still need to work on, but overall I'm pleased with the improvement."

Pleasant Valley wasted no time in taking control of this contest, which was played before a sparse crowd at the Honesdale High School Athletic Complex.

The Bears generated big plays on offense, defense and special teams in rolling to an early lead.

Dekimbe Smith blocked and recovered a pair of first period Honesdale punts, each of which set up a Pleasant Valley score.

Quarterback Derek Walling capped the first drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Robert Getz. It turned out to be a monster night for Getz. The Bears' star tailback scored four times, via almost every route possible.

He returned two punts of 80 and 45 yards to The House and added a 1-yard scoring plunge just after intermission.

Defensively, Gary Taaffe led the charge. Pleasant Valley's big defensive end picked off a Tim Hart pass at the line of scrimmage, then rumbled 28 yards to paydirt.

The Bears closed out their scoring early in the four quarter. Defensive end Chris Mendoza lined up at fullback and bulled his way into the Hornet endzone from two yards out.

"I think the thing that I'm most proud of is that we didn't dwell on what happened last week," Coach Terwilliger said. "We were able to come out here tonight and do some nice things. Now, it's time to get ready for Wyoming Valley West."
