Special visit

The Western Pocono Lions Club will welcome its own member as speaker at this week's meeting, Bob Kelsey, currently the District Governor of District 14U.

Kelsey will detail his plans for the district and discuss the 2010 International Lions Convention held in Australia this past summer.

The club will meet at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 15, at The Hamilton in Saylorsburg.

Participants are reminded to bring a nonperishable food that will be donated to the local food pantry, or be prepared to feed the Purple Pig, whose contents will also be used to assist local food pantries.

Open house

The Chestnuthill Elementary Center in Brodheadsville will hold its open house from 6-8 p.m., Sept. 15.

West End Rotary

The next West End Rotary Club will meet Sept. 16 at 7:30 a.m. at the Western Pocono Community Library.

Zion Seniors

The next gathering for Zion's Senior Citizen Group is Thursday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. Participants are reminded to bring a sandwich. Beverages are provided.

New schedule

Zion Lutheran Church of Brodheadsville has begun its fall worship schedule. Sunday worship is now at 8 and 10:30 a.m. with Sunday School for all ages at 9:15 a.m.

Choir practice began on Sept. 7 and will continue weekly on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.

Missionary visitors

Kurt and Cynthia Zimmerman, career missionaries with World Gospel Mission, will be visiting Effort United Methodist Church Sept. 18-19.

Serving in Bolivia, the Zimmermans will speak and show slides at the 5 p.m. service Saturday evening and at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services on Sunday. Community residents are invited to attend any of the services.

While in Bolivia, Kurt Zimmerman has taught fifth and sixth grades and coached baseball and basketball. He serves as a youth leader, counselor, and music ministry team leader at Cristo Viene Church.

Cynthia, is a high school math teacher at Santa Cruz Christian Learning Center. She also ministers as a Sunday School teacher at Cristo Viene Church. After their homeland ministry assignment, the Zimmermans will return to their ministries in Bolivia.

The first World Gospel Mission missionaries arrived in Bolivia in January 1944. The main ministries in Bolivia are church planting and evangelism. WGM, headquartered in Marion, Indiana, is an interdenominational missionary organization. There are more than 300 missionaries and support staff serving on six continents.

GFWC women's club

GFWC Western Pocono Women's Club meets on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Effort United Methodist Church in Effort during the months of March through December. The Sept. 20 meeting will have Helen Barosky speak about identity fraud. Women of the community are invited to join the group for an informative evening.

Kick-off meeting

The Women of the ELCA of Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville are holding a fall kick-off meeting at 2 p.m., Sept. 21.

Clothing drive

Monroe County's Family Promise, which houses its clients once every 13 weeks at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, is holding a clothing drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday. Sept. 25, at its day care center at the Stroudsburg Wesleyan Church.

Being accepted are wearable clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, backpacks, briefcases, hats, gloves, ties, linens, blankets, sheets, tablecloths towels and stuffed animals.

PIC meets

Pride in Chestnuthill (PIC) has begun its yearly meeting schedule. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Chestnuthill Township building. For more information call (570) 992-7247 or (570) 992-5258.

The group is looking at businesses in Chestnuthill that have improved and maintained their respective property, to receive the group's 5th annual Beautification Award,

As the grass and weeds die off PIC is looking at having a few more litter drives. Residents are welcome and encouraged to participate. For more information call the above numbers.
