Tigers pick up golf and boys soccer wins

Northwestern came up with wins in golf and boys soccer in scholastic sports action on Monday.

In other action, Panther Valley won two on the links and Pleasant Valley picked up a golf win. Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua got wins in girls golf and Marian grabbed a girls volleyball victory.

BOYS SOCCER

Wilson-Northwestern

After a scoreless first half, Northwestern scored six goals in the second half and went on to shutout Wilson 6-0 in Colonial League play.

James Hoover led the Tigers with a hat-trick. Teammate Austin Marich added two goals, while Daniel Masetti scored another.

Talon Williams made four saves in net en route to the shutout.

Southern Lehigh

-Northern Lehigh

Southern Lehigh handled Northern Lehigh with ease in its Colonial League soccer game, winning 5-1.

Kris Kassel and Justin Festa each had two goals for the Spartans. Ben Hangey had the fifth tally.

The Bulldogs' only goal was scored by Tom Kurpa.

GOLF

Bangor-Northwestern

Northwestern had three golfers shoot under 80 and went on to knock off Colonial League foe Bangor, 394-414.

Nick Vecellio led the Tigers with a three-over 73. Cole Miller (76) and Tyler Kunsman (79) were also under 80.

Panther Valley (14-1) picked up two golf victories, beating both Williams Valley and Millersburg with a score of 355.

The Panthers' Matt Tucker led all golfers with an 81. Kory Lopata also went under 90 with an 87. Scott Nevenglosky (92) and Mike Hadesty (95) rounded out the scoring.

East Stroudsburg North-Pleasant Valley

Five of Pleasant Valley's six golfers won their respective match and helped the Bears to a 13 1/2 - 4 MVC golf victory over East Stroudsburg North.

Kyle Adamonis, Bryan Baumgartner and Elliot Custred each won by a score of 3-0 for Pleasant Valley.

The match was shorted to 14 holes due to heavy rain.

Lehighton-Pocono Mountain East

Pocono Mountain East blanked Lehighton on the golf course, winning 18-0 at Buck Hill Falls.

Due to severe storms, the teams only played 14 holes.

Cole Rex scored a 70, Nick Mantz a 73 and Jake Hoats a 76 for the locals.

GIRLS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Nativity

Jim Thorpe scored three first half goals and held on to beat Nativity, 5-4.

Kristen Lawrence and Chelsea Smelas each scored two goals in a row for the Lady Olympians. Lawrence also had an assist.

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

Tamaqua got its offense back on track with a convincing 9-3 win over North Schuylkill.

Kayla Hope ended the night with three goals. She was backed up by Kailee Rottet and Ali Updike, both of which scored two goals. Lauren Mateyak and Cady O'Malley each chipped in with a goal as well.

Chey Bates and Christine Streisel combined for 10 saves for Tamaqua (5-1,2-1).

The Raiders made it a sweep in the JV game 4-0.

FIELD HOCKEY

Easton-Pleasant Valley

In non-conference play, Easton hung out to defeat Pleasant Valley 2-1 in field hockey action.

The Rovers' two goals were scored by Michelle Couch and Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez also had an assist.

Felicia Dominici tallied the Bears' lone goal.

VOLLEYBALL

Mahanoy Area-Marian

Marian (3-0) was able to sweep Mahanoy Area in its Schuylkill League volleyball match, winning 25-20, 25-14, 25-12.

The Fillies' offense was led by MaryKate Sherkness and her 14 kills. Rachel Krajcirik helped out with 30 assists.

Teammate Taylor Mele played well on both sides, as she recorded 11 digs and ten aces.

Marian's JV also won, 25-16, 25-12.

Weatherly in North Schuylkill Tournament

Weatherly's volleyball team recently placed second in the North Schuylkill Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Wreckers made their way to the finals by beating (in order) Shamokin (25-23, 25-10), Shenandoah (25-21, 25-11) and Mt. Carmel (25-8, 25-8).

Unfortunately, Weatherly lost in the finals to the host Spartans in three games, 25-23, 13-25, 25-15.

Brittany Hinkle and Sarah Dolinsky led the Wreckers with 67 and 51 digs apiece. They each had over 20 kills as well (Hinkle 29, Dolinsky 20).

Rachel Heister dished out 54 assists throughout the tournament. Alicia Panzarella and Sam Strizak added 38 and 35 digs respectively, while Alyssa Kephart added 29 digs and 16 kills.
