Lehighton, NL, NW field hockey winners

Lehighton, Northern Lehigh and Northwestern all notched field hockey wins on Tuesday.

FIELD HOCKEY

ES North-Lehighton

Echo Bretz scored a pair of goals to lead Lehighton to a 3-0 Mountain Valley Conference victory over East Stroudsburg North.

Bretz scored a first half to give the Indians (3-1, 3-0) an early lead. Bretz and Rachel Werley added second half insurance goals. Sarah Keer had an assist on Werley's goal.

Lehighton had a 24-4 advantage in shots.

Indian goalie Kristina Schell needed to make three saves to get the shutout. Tiffany Delgado had 10 saves for East Stroudsburg North (1-3, 1-4).

Lehighton won the JV game, 2-1.

Northern Lehigh-Pen Argyl

Northern Lehigh scored two goals in each half and beat Pen Argyl, 4-2 in Colonial League action.

Morgane Danish, Rachel Wagner, Kelsey Follweiler and Kiana Bellesfield each scored for the Lady Bulldogs (2-3).

Teammate Kristi Seiler had two assists, while Casey Govalla and Wagner had one as well.

Northwestern-Palmerton

Northwestern dominated play and breezed to a 6-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Paige Horner and Caileigh Landrigan both scored a pair of goals for the Tigers while Sara Jones and Jenn Groller scored one goal apiece. Horner also had two assists and Ashley Pechacek added one.

Northwestern finished with a 28-4 advantage in shot and a 14-0 edge in corners.

BOYS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Pine Grove

The Cardinals used a pair of first half goals from Travis Humphrey en route to a 3-0 Division I victory over the Olympians.

Brett Weber added a second-half score for the Cardinals.

Pine Grove had a 25-2 edge in shots on goal.

ES North-Lehighton

East Stroudsburg North scored three goals in the second half and ran way from Lehighton, 4-0 in MVC play.

Jarrei Bobb had a goal and an assist for the Timberwolves. Teammates Jelanee Gooding, Sean Leone and Owen Jones also added tallies.

Lehighton fell to 1-3 (0-3) on the year.

Weatherly-Halifax

The Wreckers dropped a 3-1 decision to Halifax.

No other information was available.

Upper Dauphin-Tamaqua

The Blue Raiders used a goal in each half to knock off Upper Dauphin, 2-0.

Tamaqua's Jake Fegley scored early in the first half. Cody Estremera added another with three minutes to go in the game. Eric Bachert assisted on the play.

Zack Lakitsky made four saves in net to preserve the shutout.

GIRLS TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-MMI Prep

The Jim Thorpe girls' tennis team picked up its third win on the season by defeating MMI Prep, 4-1.

The No. 2 and No. 3 singles players for the Olympians, Anna Domingo and Marissa Farra, each won in three sets.

The locals' two doubles teams of Alexandrea Mosteller/Katie Jones and Kline/Kasey Herman helped out by posting straight-set victories,

Pocono Mountain East-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley swept MVC-foe Pocono Mt. East in its tennis match, winning 7-0.

All three of the Bears' singles players, Kristin Cook, Sarah Elmontacir and Lauren Heckelman, each won in straight sets. Cook needed a tie-breaker to win her first set.

Perhaps the best match of the day was won by the local doubles team of Emily Skutnik/Nicole Reeder. After losing the first set, the two came back to win the second set in a 10-8 tie-break. They then went on to take the third set, 7-5.

Fellow teams of Steph Cook/Angela Leonardi, Karli Williams/Erin Dougherty and Michelle Ubbens/Melissa Smith also posted victories for the Bears (3-1 MVC).

Pleasant Valley-Lehighton-Stroudsburg-Pocono Mt. West-Pocono Mt. East

Pleasant Valley won all six of its matches in its five-team MVC track meet Tuesday afternoon.

Dana McAllister took first-place on the girls side for the Lady Bears with a time of 21:44. She was joined in the top ten by teammates Stacy Wojy (4th), Sam Klingel (5th), Kaitlyn Smith (6th), Steph Palmer (8th) and Brittany Dunay (10th). All six had times under 23:23.

Pleasant Valley's Dan Rose placed fourth on the boys' side with a time of 19:02. Fellow Bear Alex Larkin finished right behind him with a time of 19:06. Tim Landes (8th) and Tom O'Leary also finished in the top 13.

The Crimson Tide rolled to a 3-0 win over the Olympians by scores of 25-6, 25-14, 25-12 in a Schuylkill League match.

Hayley Dunkel had 15 points, eight aces and nine kills for the winners.

Pottsville also won the JV game 2-0 with scores of 25-7, 25-15.

Panther Valley-

Upper Dauphin

Panther Valley outlasted Upper Dauphin, 25-18, 26-24, 24-26, 25-19 in a Schuylkill League match.

The Panthers (3-2; 3-1) got outstanding performances at the net from Amy Yusella (13 kills); Chrissy Micholik (12 kills, 14 assists); and Deanna Focht (nine kills). Also contributing to the victory were Lyndsay Kusko (10 service points, three aces, 12 digs); Sarah Brachide (nine service points, two aces); and Jessica Snisky (nine service points, two aces).

Upper Dauphin won the JV match, 2-0.

East Stroudsburg So.-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley defeated East Stroudsburg South, 25-8, 25-9, 25-10 to increase its record to 7-1 (2-0) on the year.

Andrea Giardina led the Lady Bears attack by going 14-for-14 from the service line. Teammate Kayla Dorney ended rallies with her seven kills.

Brittni Cumberland was the helper on the night, as she finished with 15 assists.

Weatherly-Nativity

Nativity knocked off Schuylkill League foe Weatherly in three games, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16.

The Wreckers' Brittany Hinkle and Sarah Dolinsky led the team on defense with 25 and 22 digs apiece. Sam Strizak (17 digs), Alyssa Kephart (13 digs) and Alicia Panzarella (10 digs) helped out on defense as well. Rachel Heister added 11 assists.

Nativity took the JV contest, 21-25, 25-13, 25-7.

Hazleton-Tamaqua

Tamaqua swept Hazleton in a non-league match, 25-14, 25-13, 25-11.

Sarah Paluck had a huge night for the Raiders with 18 service points, seven aces and seven kills. Sarah Lesisko added 12 service points, six aces, and three kills while Stacey Wallace contributed four service points and eight kills.

Stroudsburg-Lehighton

Lehighton cruised to a 25-19, 25-8, 25-21 Mountain Valley Conference sweep of Stroudsburg.

Sisters Debra and Jessica Lobein both had huge games for the Indians. Debra had seven aces, five kills, five assists and five digs while Jessica added 18 digs, six kills and three aces.

Also playing well for Lehighton were Lauren Poremba (10 digs, six aces, two kills); Dallas Seltzer (seven digs, five kills); and Lauren DiMattia (six kills).
