Tamaqua girls get xc sweep

The Tamaqua girls posted a pair of cross country victories on Wednesday.

Other scholastic sports highlights included Northwestern wins in both boys soccer and golf; Tamaqua victories in girls soccer and volleyball; and a Northern Lehigh boys soccer win.

BOYS SOCCER

No. Lehigh-Wilson

Northern Lehigh used the strength of two first-half goals to record a 3-1 Colonial League win over Wilson.

Channing Shiffert and Tyler Hoppes accounted for the Bulldogs' first half scores, while Jimmy Bilger provided an insurance goal with one in the second half.

Justin Molitoris had eight saves for the Bulldogs.

Northwestern-Moravian A.

Jeremy Ettl's second half goal was all Northwestern needed to score a 1-0 Colonial League victory over Moravian Academy.

The Tigers' Isaiah Danner was credited with the assist on the goal, which handed the Lions' their first league loss of the season.

Talon Williams got the shutout victory, finishing with 11 saves in the Northwestern (5-1 CL) win.

Palmerton-Notre Dame (GP)

Notre Dame of Green Pond blanked Palmerton for a 4-0 Colonial League win.

Nick Aquilina scored a hat-trick in the first half for the Crusaders.

The Bombers' keeper Brett Snyder finished with 15 saves. Jeff Barr made 10 saves to record the shutout for the Crusaders.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Tamaqua did all its scoring in the first half and rolled to a 4-0 victory over Schuylkill League Division rival Pottsville.

Lauren Mateyak started the Blue Raiders' scoring off with a goal before Ali Updike followed up with two unassisted goals. Kailee Rottet finished off the scoring with under a minute to play before half.

Chey Bates recorded her second shutout of the season, finishing with seven saves.

Jim Thorpe-Blue Mt.

Blue Mountain used a big second half to pull away for a 5-2 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.

The teams were tied at 1-1 at halftime thanks to a goal by Cat Condley.

Condley also added a second half goal, but it wasn't enough as Blue Mountain scored four times to pull away.

Monica Eckley and Jeanna McElmoyle had assists for the Olympians. Olympian goalie Chelsea Smelas made 15 saves.

CROSS COUNTRY

Tamaqua-Schuylkill Haven-Weatherly

Tamaqua finished 3-1 on the day, while Weatherly ended up being swept in a Schuylkill League meet.

The Lady Blue Raiders recorded a perfect day scoring 15-50 victories over both the Wreckers and Schuylkill Haven. Meanwhile, the Blue Raiders' boys team split with a 22-33 win over the Wreckers and fell 26-31 to the Hurricanes.

In the girls' meet, an unusual occurence happened as the Blue Raiders' Dana Ansbach, Amber Carroll, Cecily Kohlmeir, Jess Leiby, Colleen Rorke and Schuyler Schmidt all crossed the finish line at the same to tie for a first place finish in a time of 24:24. The Wreckers' Suzanne Reigle just missed a top-10 finish finishing in 11th.

Weatherly's Andy Vack turned in a strong second place finish. The Blue Raiders were paced by Joe Rudy and Phil Christman, who finished third and fourth respectively.

Blue Mountain ran away with a Schuylkill League sweep over Panther Valley.

The Blue Eagles knocked off the Panthers by identical 15-50 scores.

Sindle Griffiths paced the Lady Panthers with a fifth-place finish. The Panthers' Austin Karnish crossed the finish line in ninth.

The Bears' Brian Denaro and James Lavender knocked off their Cavalier opponents for 3-0 match-play wins. Alex Kaye carded a low round of 76 to lead the Bears.

Tamaqua rolled to a 25-4, 25-3, 25-6 non-league win over visiting Catasauqua.

Paige Baddick paced the Blue Raiders' attack with 18 service points, 13 assists and three aces. Sarah Lesisko chipped in with 19 service points, nine aces and four kills. Stacey Wallace (six service points, three aces, seven kills) and Sarah Paluck (12 service points, three aces, three kills) also contributed to the victory.

JV FOOTBALL

Tamaqua-Lehighton

Tamaqua posted a 46-14 victory over Lehighton.

The Blue Raiders' Tyler Hope scored on a 55-yard scamper on offense, had a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and then later picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a score.

Nolan Zeigler added a one-yard TD run and a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Raider. Jake Love's 30-yard touchdown run and Dustin Vandermartin's 25-yard TD pass to Nate Edmonds accounted for the other Tamaqua scores.

The Indians scored both of their touchdowns in the final frame. Logan Hine hit Ian Zimmerman with a 15-yard TD pass and then found Dan Berger for a 55-yard touchdown.

FROSH FOOTBALL

Marian-Schuylkill Haven

Frank Nietz had a field day against Schuylkill Haven scoring three touchdown as Marian run away with a 36-14 win.

Nietz ran for a 50-yard touchdown, caught a pass from Calvin Talbott for a 85 yard touchdown, and also returned a punt for 50 yards for another Colts' score.

Sam Budusky (60 yards), Anthony Agosti (25 yards) and Nico Agosti (60 yards) also added long touchdown runs for Marian (2-0).
