Tamaqua, Pleasant Vy. record soccer victories

Tamaqua and Pleasant Valley recorded boys soccer victories on Saturday.

BOYS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Tamaqua rolled to a 5-1 Schylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

The victors blew things open in the first half, building a 3-0 lead off two goals by Gonzalo Cascante and one by Jacob Fegley.

In the second half, Cascante added another for the hat trick, while teammate Cesar Picone scored unassisted.

Jim Thorpe avoided the shutout when James Denny found Corey Ligenza for a goal.

In goal, Tamaqua's Zack Lakitsky and Tyler Cimino combined for 13 saves. Jim Thorpe's Justin Kaminski stopped 31 shots in the losing effort.

Beth. Cath.-Lehighton

Anthony Rossino gave the Indians the early lead, but Bathlehem Catholic rallied for a 4-1 non-league win.

The Golden Hawks outshot Lehighton 16-8 in the game. Lehighton's Shane Fordyce made five saves.

With the loss, the Tribe drops to 2-4 on the season, while Bethlhem Catholic improves to 3-3.

Allen-Pleasant Valley

The Bears posted a 2-0 non-leaguye win over Allen.

Tyler Michlik scored the first Bears' goal off an assist from Alex Mansour. Ricky Forte added an insurance goal off another assist from Monsour.

Pleasant Valley had 23-8 edge in shots on goal. The Bears' AJ Werkheiser had the shutout in goal, stopping four Allen shots.

With the win, PV improves to 6-1 overall. Allen falls to 2-3-1 on the season.

Palisades-Palmerton

Palisades flexed its soccer strength, blanking Palmerton, 6-0, in Colonial League action.

The Pirates' Bobby Kroschwitz had a monster of a game, scoring five times.

For Palmerton, which was outshot 18-9 in the contest, Brett Snyder made 12 saves in goal.

GIRLS SOCCER

Scr. Prep-Tamaqua

Scranton Prep edged Tamaqua, 3-2, in a non-league game.

Kayla Hope and Kailee Rottet scored goals for the Raiders. Lauren Mateyak added an assist.

Both teams had 12 shots on goal with the Raiders Chey Bates making eight saves.

In the JV contest, Tamaqua posted a 4-1 win as Taylor Gerber scored two goals.

Jim Thorpe-Sch. Haven

Chelsea Smelas gave Jim Thorpe an early lead, but Schuylkill Haven fought back for a 2-1 Schuylkill League win.

The Hurricanes handed Jim Thorpe the tough loss when Jen Trumbo scored on a penalty kick with under two minutes remaining.

Jeanna McElmoyle had an assist for the Olympians.

Jim Thorpe held an 18-8 advantage in shots. Smelas and Cat Condley combined for six saves in the Olympian goal.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lehighton-AB Carroll

Lehighton downed Archbishop Carroll, 4-1, in a non-league match.

Kaycie Andrew and Jordyn Homyak had first half goals to put the Indians ahead 2-1. Lauren Michalik and Haley Coleman added insurance scores in the second half.

Homyak, Rachel Werley and Echo Bretz all had assists for Lehighton.

The Indians (5-1) held a 10-4 advantage in shots

Lehighton won the JV game, 1-0. Coleman had the game's lone goal.

Palmerton-No. Lehigh

Lauren Zellner's goal with 10 minutes left in the game sealed Northern Lehigh's 2-1 Colonial League win over Palmerton.

Payton Marunich assisted the game-winner to help NL improve to 4-3 overall on the season and 4-1 in the Colonial League.

Kelsey Follweiler opened up the scoring on an unassisted goal in the first half. The score remained there through halftime, but Palmerton's Greta Hartzell tied things up for the Lady Bombers early on in the second half.

Northern Lehigh had a huge 36-10 advantage in shots. Nicole Horn had nine saves in goal for the Bulldogs..

N'western-Catasauqua

Jenn Groller scored a pair of goals to lead Northwestern to a 4-1 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Tiffany Gumina and Ashley Pechacek also scored for the Tigers (4-2). Picking up assists were Groller, Caileigh Landrigan and Paige Horner.

Northwestern had a 16-7 advantage in shots. Sam Rex made six saves in the Tiger goal.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Marian in

Pottsville Invitational

The Fillies took part in the Pottsville Invitational and came away with a third place finish, going 5-3 in pool play and 7-5 overall on the day.

In pool play, the Fillies downed Blue Mountain and Pine Grove by identical 2-0 scores. They split with Chambersburg and dropped two to eventual champion Reading Central Catholic.

At the conclusion of pool play, Marian defeated Chambersburg in a one-game playoff to determine second place in their pool. The Fillies rolled to a 15-3 victory in that game.

In the knockout round, Marian faced Nativity in the semifinals and was eliminated 2-1.

Individually for the Fillies, MaryKate Sherkness had a tremendous all-around tournament with 47 kills, 35 digs and 11 aces. Tori Zadyak had 22 kills and 15 blocks; Kathleen Reilly was a force with 16 kills, seven digs and seven blocks; Taylor Mele had 50 digs, nine kills and four aces; and Rachel Krajcirik had 88 assists, 44 digs and nine aces.

GIRLS TENNIS

Blue Mt.-Jim Thorpe

Blue Mt. cruised to a 6-1 victory over Tamaqua.

The Raiders' only victory came at No. 3 singles where Jordan Nowacki defeated her opponent, 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
