The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization met Sept. 13, in the school library, with 54 parents in attendance. Room parents were assigned for each class. Names were included in student folders for parent information.
Anyone interested in supporting the students is welcome to become a member. The organization will be accepting memberships through Dec. 31. Tara McCarroll-Stauffenberg is in charge of the membership drive.
Fundraising packets have been distributed to all classes and are due back by Sept. 22.
Open house at Tamaqua Elementary School will be held Sept. 22. Hours for grades two and three will be from 6-7:30 p.m. For families of the fourth and fifth grade students, hours will be from 7:30-9 p.m.
Rush Elementary will hold open house for all grades on Sept. 23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Parent sessions are scheduled as follows: Transitional kindergarten at 6:45 p.m.; kindergarten at 7 p.m.; kindergarten plus at 7:15 p.m.; first grade at 7:45 p.m. Parents may meet with individual teachers who are not conducting classroom sessions.
The school store will be open for both open houses.
Plans are being finalized for TEPTO's participation in the Tamaqua Heritage Day Festival on Oct. 11. For more information, or to make a donation, contact Lori at (570) 668-4948.
The next meeting will be held Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m., in the school library.
Rush-Ryan seniors
The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Sept. 14 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 45 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. One new member, Ada Robinson, was welcomed.
Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker. Birthday greetings were offered to Jane Tartar and Julia Clouser. A moment of silence was held in memory of Doris Zellner.
Martin and Becker provided inspirational readings. A date for the annual Christmas party was selected. The event will be held Dec. 14 at the Ryan Township Fire Company.
The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. Anyone 50 or older is welcome to join.
Bloodmobile
An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be held this Wednesday, from 1-6 p.m., in the social hall of St. John United Church of Christ. The church is located at the intersection of Pine and Biddle streets in Tamaqua.
Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in generally good health is eligible to donate.
This visit is being sponsored by the Alpha Theta Masters Sorority.
Elementary band
Tamaqua Raider Band director Mark Beltz has announced that Instrument Rental Night, for fourth and fifth grade Tamaqua Area School District students, will be held today, beginning at 7 p.m., in the school district auditorium. The auditorium is located between the high and middle schools.

Cross country
The Tamaqua Cross Country Boosters will meet today, at 7 p.m., in front of the Tamaqua Senior High School. Anyone interested in supporting the teams is welcome to attend.
Recycling
Wednesday is the day for curbside recycling pickup for all residents of Tamaqua.
All recyclable items must be placed in the containers issued to each borough household. Any other containers, such as plastic bags and cardboard boxes, will be emptied and left behind.
Anyone who needs a recycling container may contact borough hall at (570) 668-3444.
Collection bins for cardboard have been moved to the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Treatment Plant Road.
Collection bins for newspaper can be found at the Tamaqua Borough Garage on East Broad Street.
