Band festival

The Tamaqua Area "Raider" Band and Band Boosters will host the 14th Annual Land of the Running Water Band Festival on Oct. 9 in the Tamaqua Sports Stadium. This year's event will feature 13 visiting bands to be judged by a panel of current and former music educators. Trophies will be awarded.

Marching bands scheduled to perform their fall field shows are: the Minersville Battlin' Miners; Panther Valley Panthers; Mahanoy Area Golden Bears; Nativity B.V.M.; Shenandoah Valley Devil Pride; Hamburg Area Hawks; Wilson Area; Tri Valley Bulldogs; Williams Valley Viking Pride; Pottsville Area; Exeter Township; Bangor Slaters; and Southern Lehigh.

The host band will also perform.

Tickets are now available and will also be available the day of the event.

Competition will begin at 6:30 p.m., rain or shine.

Bike race

The Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission (ESRC) is organizing its annual Coal Cracker Classic Mountain Bike Race, to be held Oct. 10 in conjunction with the annual Tamaqua Heritage Day Festival. The race will take place at the Bungalow Park.

Registrations will begin at 8 a.m. with the race scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

The race will feature beginner, sport and expert categories; men's, women's and single speed races; for five age groups. A bike and helmet are required, while pads are recommended. Pre-registrations are now being accepted at www.bikereg.com. Deadline for pre-registration is Oct. 6

Recovery help

"Celebrate Recovery" sessions are held every Friday, 7-9 p.m., at New Life Assembly of God Church, 407 Schuylkill Ave. Anyone who needs help recovering is welcome to attend.

SAL programs

The Tamaqua Salvation Army has a number of programs and activities scheduled over the next few weeks, including continuing programs such as: Coffee Cafe, Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon; Needlebug Sewing and Quilting Club, Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon; Older and Bolder, Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to noon.

Worship services are held Sundays at 11 a.m., with Sunday school classes at 10 a.m. Men's and Women's ministries meet Tuesdays at 6 p.m.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Richard Hafer will be the guest minister at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Rev. Hafer will share his ministry with the Food for the Poor Mission. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, practice for the Sunday school Christmas program will be held at 10:30 a.m.; the Youth Group will leave at 12:30 p.m. for a trip to Split Rock Lodge; and the Daisy/Brownie Troops will met at 6:30 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Monday, Women's Bible Study meets at 6 p.m.; Wednesday, dinner theater rehearsal at 6:15 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., Confirmation class meets at 6 p.m. and Brownies meet at 6:30 p.m.

Choir rehearsals are held on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: Junior Choir at 7 p.m., and Senior Choir at 7:45 p.m.

Calvary UM

The Rev. Brian Reading will officiate at this Sunday's 10:25 a.m. worship service in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, an evening of praise, worship and Bible study will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday prayer and praise services are held at 7 p.m.
