Good day for Tamaqua teams

Tamaqua picked up victories in boys soccer, girls soccer, tennis and volleyball on Thursday. Pleasant Valley also had multiple wins, picking up decisions in boys soccer and golf. The Northwestern field hockey and Marian volleyball teams were the only other local winners.

FIELD HOCKEY

Salisbury-Northwestern

Northwestern dominated Salisbury and rolled to a 7-0 Colonial League victory.

Lauren Horner had a huge day for the Tigers as she scored two goals and had three assists.

Also scoring goals for Northwestern were Tiffany Gumina, Sara Jones, Jenn Groller, Ashley Pechacek and Samantha Partington. Paige Horner chipped in two assists.

The Tigers had a 26-1 advantage in shots and a 14-1 edge in corners. corners:

Pleasant Vy.-Parkland

Brooke Benedict's goal with 13 minutes left gave Parkland a 2-1 non-league victory over Pleasant Valley.

Allison Heckman's first half goal had given the Bears (5-4) an early lead, but Parkland tied the game on a goal by Stephanie Goldberg before Benedict eventually won it.

Parkland (7-1) had a 9-7 edge in shots.

Pleasant Valley goalie Hannah Bard made seven saves.

BOYS SOCCER

Palisades-No. Lehigh

Brandon Moninghoff had a goal and an assist to lead Palisades to a 3-0 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

The Pirates had a 22-13 advantage in shots. Palisades goalie Richard Dardell stopped all 13 shots. Northern Lehigh goalie Justin Molitoris made 19 saves.

Saucon Vy.-Palmerton

Saucon Valley blanked Palmerton, 5-0, in Colonial League action.

Kyle Lascelle and Jake Schuyler had two goals apiece for the Panthers.

Saucon Valley shad a 33-12 advantage in shots. Bomber goalie Brett Snyder had 18 saves.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Gonzalo Cascante scored with just over two minutes remaining to lift Tamaqua to a 2-1 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.

Cascante also scored the Raiders' first goal. It came at the 31:54 mark of the first half and tied the game at 1-1.

Tamaqua had a 9-6 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corners.

Raider goalie Zack Lakitsky made three saves.

PM East-Pleasant Vy.

Malik Krcic accounted for all the scoring as Pleasant Valley erupted in the second half to defeat Pocono Mountain East, 3-0, in a Mountain Valley Conference match.

Krcic's goals were all unassisted with the second one coming on a penalty kick.

The Bears (8-1, 4-0) had a 10-8 advantage in shots. PV goalie AJ Werkhesier made three saves to record the shutout.

Upper Dauphin-Jim Thorpe

Zach Lesher and Chris Jensen both scored a pair of goals to lead Upper Dauphin to a 5-0 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

No. Schuylkill-Jim Thorpe

North Schuylkill blanked Jim Thorpe, 4-0, in Schuylkill League game on Wednesday.

John Chernewski scored twice for the Spartans.

Jim Thorpe had 23 shots in the game, but couldn't find the back of the net as it twice hit the post and also missed a penalty shot.

Olympian goalie Justin Kaminski made 19 saves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Tamaqua got off to a fast start, as the Raiders scored in under a minute and went on to defeat Pine Grove 7-1.

Kailee Rottet started the scoring for the Raiders (8-2,5-1) on her first of two goals in the first half. Kayla Hope, Cady O'Malley and Alex Wagner joined in on the scoring and took a 5-1 halftime lead.

Ali Updike ignited the offense in the second half by picking up her 75th career goal. Hope later added her second goal of the game.

With the victory, head coach Clem McCarroll registered his 100th career victory.

Salisbury-So. Lehigh-Palisades

The Northern Lehigh girls' cross country team won two of its four match-ups in its Colonial League meet, while the boys finished 1-3.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Samantha Corcoran. She came in seventh with a time of 21:54. Teammate Rachel Barnett placed 20th.

The local boys were paced by Austin Danish's fifth-place finish. He had a time of 17:33.

Salisbury handed Jim Thorpe a 3-2 setback.

No. 2 singles player Anna Domingo claimed one victory for the locals, winning in three-set tie-breaker, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6).

The Olympians' other win came from the doubles team of Kearsen Meckes/Allison Porembo. They won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Tamaqua won three-of-five singles matches along with both doubles matches to defeat Pottsville, 5-2 in tennis action.

The Raiders' Vanessa Wagner needed two tie-breakers to win in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (6-4). Teammates Jordan Nowacki and Deana DeWire added straight set victories.

Tamaqua's doubles teams of Jordan Nowacki/Lauren Androkitis and Taylor Urban/Nicky Mateyak also won in straight sets.

Pleasant Valley won three matches and tied another, and pulled out a 10 1/2 - 7 1/2 golf victory over MVC foe Pocono Mountain East.

Brain Danaro and Colin Cook each won 3-0 for the Bears. Teammate Andrew Hansen posted the other win (2-1). Bryan Baumgartner tied his respective opponent.

East's Jay Ruvane was the medalist on the day with a 77.

The Indians only match-play victory came from Cole Rex, who edged TJ O'Connor, 2-1.

Derek Reese shot one-under and teammate Ian Paul shot even-par and led the Spartans to a 293-322 win over at Tamaqua.

The match was played at Rolling Meadowns, where the par is only 68.

Trevor Reinhardt led the Raiders with a 75. Steve Christ (79), Matt Hadesty (80) and Colin Johnson (88) rounded out the scoring.

Jim Thorpe dropped a Schuylkill League match to Halifax, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17.

Marian-Williams Vy.

Marian swept Williams Valley on the road Thursday night, winning 25-5, 25-11, 25-12 in Schuylkill League volleyball play.

MaryKate Sherkness had a big night for the Fillies (6-0), as she finished with 22 service points, 12 aces and ten kills.

Teammates Taylor Mele and Rachel Krajcirik each added 12 service points. Krajcirik also had 20 assists.

Panther Valley-Pottsville

Pottsville posted a 25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 25-19 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

The Panthers were led at the net by Deanna Focht (nine kills); Chrissy Micholik (nine kills); Amy Yusella (six kills, five blocks); and Steph Kachelries (four kills). Playing well defensively were Lydsay Kusko (12 digs); Yusella (10 digs) and Kristyn Gates (nine digs). Panther Valley's top servers were Kusko (nine points) and Sarah Branchide (seven points). Celene Yelico had 19 assists.

The Panthers are now 4-4 on the season.

Weatherly-Tri-Valley

Weathetly was able to take the first game against Tri-Valley, however dropped the next three and watched the Bulldogs take the win, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-14.

The Wreckers were led offensively by Brittany Hinkle's 31 assists and 13 kills. Rachel Heister added 13 assists as well.

Doing the job defensively for the locals was Alicia Panzarella (21 digs), Sam Strizak (21 digs) and Sarah Dolinsky (16 digs). Alyssa Kephart added chipped in with five blocks.

Weatherly falls to 5-3 (2-3) on the year.

Sch. Haven-Tamaqua

Tamaqua swept Schuylkill Haven at home, winning 31-29, 25-12, 25-15 in Schuylkill League play.

Paige Baddick led the Lady Raiders with 22 assists. Teammates Stacey Wallace and Sarah Paluck each added seven kills.

Fellow Raider Sarah Lesisko served well, picking up 15 points and eight aces.
