Annual ACS telethon is this weekend

The 32nd annual telethon of the Carbon-Tamaqua Unit of the American Cancer Society airs this weekend on Blue Ridge Communications TV 13.

The event, from noon to midnight on Saturday and Sunday, has numerous special events in addition to a full slate of entertainment.

Among those special events is a "Survivor Salute" at 8:15 p.m. Saturday and the presentation of "Courage Awards" between 7 and 8 p.m. Sunday.

There will be interviews with medical professionals. Among them:

• Saturday, 3:15 p.m. - Dr. Sotirious Vasilopoulos, gastroenterologist, and Dr. Rejeev Arora, colo-rectal surgeon.

• Saturday, 8:30 p.m. - Dr. Richard Boulay.

• Sunday, 1 p.m. - Dr. David Moylan, radiation oncology and Dr. Chuck Hoover, surgeon.

• Sunday, 2 p.m. - Sharon Orack, oncology department at St. Luke's Hospital.

• Sunday, 3 p.m. - ACS Patient Services.

• Sunday, 4 p.m. - Dr. Joann Calabrese, general practice.

The "Survivor Salute" features:

• From Tamaqua - George Waidell, Nancy Meiser, and Judy Behler.

• From Lehighton - Sharon Ulshafer and Ellen Beckowski.

• From Summit Hill - Mary Jane Sterling and Marc Gardiner.

• From Lansford - John Yurkunas.

• From Nesquehoning - Jamie Tatusko.

The "Courage Award" recipients on Sunday are:

• Nancy Herzog, Palmerton, 7:10 p.m.

• Hunter Wolfe, Jim Thorpe, 7:25 p.m.

• Matt Bynon, Tamaqua, 7:40 p.m.

Another highlight will be the collection of a pledge in China. Telethon host Joe Krushinsky will interview Tamaqua resident Brandon Taylor who is currently employed by a newspaper in China.
