NL wins two on diamond

Northern Lehigh picked up victories in both baseball and softball to highlight Thursday's scholastic sports card.

In other action, the Pleasant Valley softball and Tamaqua baseball teams posted wins while the Lehighton soccer team won its first game of the season.

BASEBALL

Northwestern-No. Lehigh

Northern Lehigh put runs on the scoreboard in every inning but one to pull away for an 11-3 Colonial League victory over visiting Northwestern.

Kyle Schomp led the Bulldogs' offense with a single, double, three runs scored and two RBIs, while Jake Kern chipped in with three singles, two runs scored and a RBI. Matt Gill (two singles, run scored, RBI) and Dylan Bolton (double, triple, two RBIs) also had big days for Northern Lehigh (5-0).

Peyton Bachman paced the Tigers (3-3) with two singles and a run scored. Andrew Rivera recorded two RBIs.

Nativity-Tamaqua

Mike Toth drove in four runs and helped Tamaqua knock off Nativity, 10-3, in non-league play.

Toth finished the day 2-for-3 with a three-run homer. Teammate Derek Linkhorst also had two hits and two runs scored.

Tamaqua moves to 4-1 on the year.

Pleasant Vy.-Lehighton

Rikki Correll tossed a three-hitter to lead Pleasant Valley to an 11-1 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lehighton.

The Bears (3-2, 3-0) did most of their damage early, scoring five runs in each of their first two atbats.

Dianne Klapatch had two hits and two RBIs to lead Pleasant Valley offensively. Megan Hardy added two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Kasey Meckes had a triple and scored twice.

For Lehighton (0-4, 0-2), Emily Kollar had a single and scored her team's only run.

Northern Lehigh rolled to an 11-2 Colonial League win over Northwestern.

Megan Filchner paced the Bulldogs (3-2, 2-2) with a single, triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Maggie Lear added a single, double, two runs scored and a RBI. Cassie Toth (two singles, run scored, RBI) and Amber Kibler (two singles) also contributed to the win.

Blaise Barron had two singles and an RBI for Northwestern (3-3, 2-2).

Catasauqua-Palisades-Northwestern

The Palisades girls and Catasauqua boys both picked up a pair of victories in a Colonial League tri-meet

Northwestern's girls managed one victory on the day, a 124-26 drubbing of Catty. The Tigers boys lost twice.

Haley Yost got the Lady Tigers' only victories on the track, capturing the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Northwestern also swept the throwing events and won the long jump.

In the boys meet, Tyler Stelmack (1600, 3200) and Bobby Clymer (110 hudles, 300 hurdles) accounted for Northwestern's only wins.

Jordyn Homyak's two goals were just enough offense for Lehighton to score a 2-1 Mountain Valley Conference victory over visiting East Stroudsburg North.

The Indians' Morgan Ott and Kacy Beck had assists.

Kayla Troutman grabbed 10 saves between the Lehighton posts.

The Indians earn their first win of the season to move to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the MVC. The Timberwolves fall to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the MVC.

East Stroudsburg North rolled to a 6-1 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lehighton.

The Indians' only victory came in a pro-set format at No. 1 doubles where Nick Mantz and Justin Ziegenfus combined to beat Zach Raymond and Mike Aquino, 8-6.

Lehighton (2-6) also got a strong performance from James Sverchek at No. 1 singles. Sverchek pushed Adrian Garcin to the limit before falling in three sets.
