N'western, Pleas. Vy., Marian golfers win openers

Northwestern, Pleasant Valley and Marian all had successful debuts on the golf course, while Jim Thorpe's tennis team also won its first match of the season on Monday.

GOLF

Wilson-Northwestern-Moravian Academy

Northwestern topped Moravian Academy in its Colonial League golf match on Monday, winning 433-443. The Tigers also received a forfeit win over Wilson.

The Tigers' Cole Miller was the low-man on the day, as he fired a one-over 71. Steven Reitz (84) and Nick Vecellio (86) also shot under 90.

Danny Lessig and Jack Reilly each shot an 84 to pace Moravian.

Palmerton-So. Lehigh-Bangor

The Blue Bombers dropped their Colonial League opener to Southern Lehigh and Bangor at the par 72 Cherry Valley Golf Course.

Ben Andrews of Palmerton and Ben Lentine of Bangor tied for medalist honors with both firing rounds of 80.

Alex Raub and Brett Snyder backed up Andrews with a 93 and 94 respectively.

Pleasant Vy.-ES North

Pleasant Valley rolled over East Stroudsburg North in an early season MVC match-up, 21-3.

The only bright spot for the Timberwolves was Ken Dixon, who shot the lowest round of the day with an 81. Besides Dixon's 3-0 win over PV golfer Jon Kraemer the match belonged to the Bears.

Seven different Bears posted 3-0 victories.

The Cardinals' Billy Durkin shot a round of 83 to take medalist honors as Pocono Mountain East handed Lehighton a 21 1/2-2 1/2 setback in their Mountain Valley Conference opener.

Mike Gottstein and Eric Mason each shot under 80 and led Marian to a 329-463 golf victory over Nativity.

Gottstein finished with a two-over 74, while Mason ended with a 78. Mark Postupack (80) and Josh Green (97) rounded out the scoring for the locals.

Jim Thorpe won its first tennis match of the season, as the Lady Olympians defeated Pottsville, 5-2.

Kasey Herman, Gabbie Binder, Haley Cope and Maria Donati all posted singles' victories for the locals. Binder, Cope and Donati each won in straight sets.

The fifth win came from the doubles team of Gabby Kline and Lindsay Capper. They won a thriller in a third-set tie-breaker, 7-6 (11-9).
