Panther Vy. picks up three victories

The Jim Thorpe and Panther Valley wrestling teams got their seasons underway this past weekend at the annual Jim Thorpe Duals. This year's duals featured ten teams including; North Schuylkill, Lower Moreland, Radnor, Cedar Cliff, Dieruff, Coatesville, Conestoga Valley, Susquehanna Township, Panther Valley and host Jim Thorpe.

The teams were split into two divisions with each team having to play each opponent in their respective pool. After pool play, the teams were seeded for the championship rounds based on their record during pool play.

Panther Valley went into the JT Duals with a young squad and some inexperienced wrestlers, but still were able to grab three wins on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers got victories against Jim Thorpe, North Schuylkill, and Susquehanna Township.

"We're happy with the way we performed," said Panther Valley head coach Tim Robb. "We have a lot of young kids this year and it's a good sign to get three wins early on in the season."

The Panthers are coming into the 2011-12 season with a lot of unknowns as far as wrestling ability goes, but Coach Robb expressed his respect for how tough his kids have been all off-season.

"This is the first team that I've coached where our leaders are setting a good example just by being tough," said Robb. "These kids have a lot of heart and they're only going to get better as the season moves forward."

The Panthers were led by Lenny Ogozalek (106) who posted a 5-0 record on the day. Zach Glassic (126), Richard Nase (126), and Rian Shubeck (220/285) also had solid outings posting 4-1 records.

The Jim Thorpe wrestling team also is coming into this season with a young and inexperienced host of wrestlers. The Olympians weren't able to earn a victory on the day, but showed head coach Shawn Albert that good things are on the horizon.

"I didn't really know what to expect coming into our duals," said Albert. "I would say about 50% of our wrestlers either didn't wrestle last year or this is their first year in the sport. At the end of the day I think the kids competed hard. We have some good athletes here, we just have to keep working at it."

The Olympians top performer on the day was Brian Ohl at the 126 pound weight class. Ohl went 4-1 on the afternoon.

After everything was said and done Cedar Cliff took home the 2011 Jim Thorpe Duals title.
