Bears' Piontkowski gets 200th win

Pleasant Valley boys basketball coach Ken Piontkowski picked up his 200th career win as the Bears' head coach on Saturday.

PV also enjoyed a first-place finish from wrestler Michael Dahlstrom at the Reno Tournament of Champions.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Nazareth-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley head coach Ken Piontkowski picked up his 200th career win as the Bears posted a 47-39 non-league victory over Nazareth.

Marquis Brown's team-high 16 points was followed closely by teammate Selwyn Wright's 15. Nick Stanovick added 10.

For Nazareth, Grant Searfoss and Tyler Smith each had 12.

PV also won the JV contest, 49-46.

Hanover-Panther Valley

Panther Valley outscored Hanover in every quarter to pull out the 53-38 non-league win.

Leading the Panthers (3-1) in scoring were Nate Mathewson with 14 points, Thad Ogozalek with 13 and Nick McArdle with nine.

Jacob Barber and Shaquille Rolle both tallied 11 points for Hanover.

Tamaqua led 41-34 heading into the final eight minutes, but Hamburg came back to post a 55-48 non-league win.

Brendan Forrest led the way for the winners with a game-high 25 points.

The Raiders received a team-high 18 points from Brett Kosciolek.

The Raiders won the JV contest, 57-27, as Adam Frantz scored 20 points.

North Schuylkill pulled away from Northwestern in the middle frames to gain a 54-24 non-league win.

Jake Rakowsky poured in a game-high 19 points for the Spartans, who used a 21-9 second quarter to gain control.

The Tigers (1-3) received six points from both Tyler Richardson and Jarrod Binder.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Williams Vy.-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe opened up a 16-0 first-quarter lead and cruised to an easy 52-17 win over Williams Valley.

The Olympians' Celeste Robinson poured in a game-high 20 points while Kristin Lawrence added 11, including three three-pointers.

Thorpe also won the JV game, 30-25.

Minersville rolled to a 70-22 non-league win over Lehighton.

The one-two punch of Reighly Melochick and Sarah Walasavage had 25 and 20 points, respectively. The two combined for 25 points in the first quarter to open a 27-5 lead.

Lehighton received a team-high six points from Taylor Yurasits.

Minersville also took the JV contest, 59-24.

Nazareth pulled away from Pleasant Valley in the third frame, and eventually registered a 60-37 non-league win.

The Blue Eagles' Morgan Calabrese led all scorers with 19 points, including five treys, while teammate Ariane Hilborn chipped in with 10.

PV was led by Kelecia Harris' 10, while three of her teammates added seven apiece.

Pleasant Valley won the JV game, 44-37.

Tri Valley's Tara Nahodil scored 19 points to lead her squad to a 52-37 win over Tamaqua.

A big third quarter proved to be the difference, as the hosts outscored the Lady Raiders 14-6 to pull away.

Maria Streisel scored 15 points for Tamaqua (1-1), while Kayla Hope had a team-high 14 rebounds.

Tri Valley also won the JV game, 36-28.

The Blue Bombers received a pin from Kane Kralik at 285 while Zach Christman added a technical fall at 132. Josh Evans added a decision win at 113.

Penn Manor Tournament

Panther Valley participated in the 25th annual Penn Manor Holiday Wrestling Tournament over the weekend.

Two Panthers placed in the event, which draws over 20 schools.

Len Ogazalek went 4-2 at 106 pounds to bring home a seventh-place finish while John Horvath placed eighth at 195 with a 2-3 mark. PV's Zach Glassic had a 2-2 record at 126 but didn't place.

Zigarski Memorial

Tournament

Tamaqua crowned three champions at the fourth annual Randy Zigarski Memorial Wrestling Tournament over the weekend at Mount Carmel.

Colin Mashack (113 pounds), Evan Mashack (152) and Brandon Silkowski (160) all claimed gold at the six-team event.

Silkowski not only earned the title at 160, but also won the award for the most pins in the least amount of time. He recorded five falls in 4:08.

The Raiders, who took third in team scoring, also received a runner-up finish from Dylan Rynkiewicz (126).

Reno Tournament

of Champions

Pleasant Valley's Michael Dahlstrom claimed the individual championship at 126 pounds in the Reno Tournament of Champions over the weekend in Nevada.

The Bears actually had three of their wrestlers place in the top three.

Dahlstrom, who earned his 100th career victory earlier in the tourney, gained his title by defeating Easton's Peter Stanley, 3-0, in the finals.

Sean Bianco (113 pounds) turned in a second place at the tourney, which featured 90 different schools, while Kenny Yenovich (106) ended third.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua-Southern Lehigh

The Blue Raiders faced off against the Spartans in the swimming lanes and returned home with two losses, as the boys dropped a 113-51 decision, while the girls lost, 113-57.

Individually for the locals, there was a sole winner, as Joann Butkus prevailed in the 50 Freestyle.
