Tax help begins
The West End AARP Tax Assistance Group from Lehighton has begun its work in the West End today, weather permitting at Salem UCC in Gilbert. Offered is free tax help for all ages, with special attention to seniors.
Federal, state and local taxes, as well as rent and property rebates will be completed.
Volunteers are there Monday and Thursday mornings, from 9 a.m. to noon.
If Pleasant Valley schools have a two-hour delay, the hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. to noon.
Those using the volunteers for help should bring six preprinted business size envelopes to be used for their respective tax returns, along with their 2009 tax return.
Condolences extended
Members of the Western Pocono Lioness Club extend condolences to club President Arlene Mullery on the passing of her 93-year-old mother.
Get Well wishes
For several years the Rev. Tom and Mrs. Suzanne "Tucker" Irwin served the congregation of Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville. Mrs. Irwin has had considerable medical difficulties due to the flu. She is now in rehabilitation at Good Shepherd in Bethlehem. Meeting reset
Due to the inclement weather, the February meeting of Operation: Touch of Home was canceled. The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, at The Gilbert American Legion Post 927.
Monroe Seniors
This week's meetings are set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, and Friday, Feb 4. The group meets in Zion Lutheran Church's Parish Hall in Brodheadsville.
Lions board
The board of directors of the Western Pocono Lions Club scheduled to meet at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Western Pocono Community Library has been canceled.
PVEN Board
Pastors and congregational representative of churches that comprise the board of directors for the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network will meet at 9 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 3.
The largest group
Effort United Methodist Church had pastor and parishioners travel to the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church this past Saturday.
The Effort UMC contingent of 20 was the largest group at the event held at the Quakertown United Methodist Church.
Many thought the worship service at the event was outstanding and the workshops were excellent even if an hour and 45 minutes long.
Other Monroe County churches also had representation, including McMichaels UMC from Chestnuthill Township.
PTO meets
The Chestnuthill PTO will meet Tuesday, Feb. 8.
Heart program
Kate Koehler, PTH, will present the program at The Chestnuthill Senior Center on Wednesday, Feb. 9. She will speak on "It's Your Heart" beginning at 11:15 a.m.
The program is free and open to the public.
