Three-vehicle crash is probed

A three-vehicle, rear-end crash was probed in Schuylkill County. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the accident occurred about 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, on SR61 at the intersection with SR443, in North Manheim Township.

Troopers said vehicles operated by Erik S. Mengel, 25, of Schuylkill Haven, Kathleen Ann Grabenstetter, 20, of Quakertown, and Thomas A. Doria, 40, of Hazleton, were all southbound in the left lane and approaching the intersection.

Doria activated his left turn signal and came to a virtual stop in order to turn left onto 443. Troopers noted that the intersection is controlled by a jughandle and left turns are not permitted at the location.

Grabenstetter came to a stop behind Doria. Mengel's 2003 Nissan Sentra then struck the rear of Grabenstetter's 2000 Toyota Corolla pushing it into the rear of Doria's 2006 Chevrolet Silverado.

Mengel was injured and taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville. No one else was reported injured.

The investigation into the crash is continuing, troopers said.
