Saving music and sporting programs across the state

Published July 02. 2011 09:02AM

Dear Editor:

I am writing to you to voice my opinion on school boards across the state cutting school music and sporting programs.

School boards cut these programs because the money is needed for other educational expenses, since the state cut the schools' funding. I oppose these actions because parts of people's lives are made up of these two extra-curricular activities.

Music in our lives could give students a brighter future. Research shows that music helps students excel academically. Sporting programs challenge students physically to improve their body and mind. This can also improve academic achievement in school. If this is true, why would the schools not do everything to keep these programs? Both music and sports help students gain the confidence they need for the future, and are just plain fun!

I am fortunate enough to be in a school district that still has these programs. I hope they continue to support these activities. I am happy that I can experience and benefit from them.
