Two locals to play on Lehigh Vy. Carpenter Cup softball squad

Published June 20. 2011 05:01PM

While the Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup is coming closer to the finals on the baseball diamond, the softball version of the same Philadelphia Phillies' sponsored event will began tomorrow morning.

The Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup's softball team, which includes players from from Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton county schools, will open tournament play tomorrow at 11 a.m. against the Inter-AC team at Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park in Philadelphia.

Only two players from the local TIMES NEWS area will take part in this event. Palmerton junior Martina Herring will serve as either a pitcher or third baseman while Northern Lehigh junior Megan Filchner's role will be as a catcher.

Philadelphia Phillies catcher Brian Schneider, who played for the Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup baseball team years ago, will serve as this year's honorary chairman.

The ladies from the Lehigh Valley won the title in 2006 and 2008. Meanwhile, they finished in second in 2007 and fourth in 2010.
