Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart.

Last week's meeting was attended by 68 members. One new members, Joan Brown, was welcomed to the group.

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and offered readings. Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Christian Life."

Vice President Doris Brobst and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their respective reports. It was reported that Faye Sweeney's brother had passed away and Shirley Shellhammer and Tom Hanlon were both released from the hospital. A discussion was held on a May outing to either Shady Maple or an Olive Garden Restaurant. Pinochle players are still needed for card sessions held following the meeting.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The meeting room is handicap accessible.

Jack and Jill

The Tamaqua YMCA's Jack and Jill Pre-School is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 school year. Preschool programs are open to children between the ages of 3-5. The four programs will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Tamaqua YMCA is located in the former Jamesway store.

North/Middle ward

The North and Middle Ward Playground Association will meet April 4, at 6 p.m., in the playground concession stand. Topics to be discussed include an Easter Egg hunt and Summer events.

New members are always welcome.

SWNC

The South Ward Neighborhood Committee will meet Thursday, at 7 p.m., in room 104 of the Lehigh Carbon Community College Morgan Center. Topics for discussion will include the annual Spring clean up, progress at the South Ward Playground site and upcoming activities.

TOPS

The local chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets Wednesdays in the education room at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale. Weigh-ins begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by a short business session and a program.

TOPS is a weight loss support group for men and women of all ages. Members learn sensible nutrition, portion control and lifestyle changes that promote lifelong health. Visitors are welcome to attend their first meeting without obligation, free of charge.

School records

The Tamaqua Area School District destroys the records of special education students seven years after a student graduates, moves out of the district or drops out of school. Parents/guardians who would like copies of their child's records may make arrangements by calling (570) 668-2566. Copy fees will be charged, at 25 cents per single side page. A compete notice is posted on the TASD website at www.tamaqua.k12.pa.us

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will be followed by a congregational meeting.

Also on Sunday, the Church Board will meet at 10:45 a.m. and Daisies will meet at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week include: Wednesday, weekly Lenten service at Ben Salem Church at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., Confirmation class meets at 6 p.m. and Brownies will met at 6:30 p.m.

The choirs rehearse on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: Junior Choir at 7 p.m. and Senior Choir rehearses at 7:45 p.m.
