Man arrested for bank robbery

Published May 05. 2011 05:00PM

A Berks County man was arrested on Wednesday and charged with the robbery of a Schuylkill County bank last year.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Algis Diaz, 25, of Reading, has been charged with the Aug. 6 robbery of the Susquehanna Bank branch office located along SR61 in Orwigsburg.

Troopers said a male entered the bank about 9:45 a.m. and demanded money. He received money from one of the tellers after he handed the teller a note stating that the bank was being robbed.

Troopers said through information received from witnesses at the scene and from other police departments investigating bank robberies within the state, led to the indentification of Diaz.

Diaz was arraigned before District Judge James Ferrier, of Orwigsburg, on robbery and related counts with bail set at $50,000. He was returned to the Berks County prison where he is being held on other unrelated charges, troopers said.
