ORWIGSBURG - Less than perfect weather conditions Monday morning didn't stop area golfers from trying to qualify for the 2011 District 11 Golf Tournament. Marian, Northwestern, Tamaqua, and Pleasant Valley all had golfers make it to the qualifying event that was held at the Schuylkill County Country Club.

Marian had two of their four golfers qualify for the tournament which will be held at the Blue Ridge Country Club Monday October 10th at eight a.m. The two Colts that played their way into the field were Josh Green and Mike Gottstein. Green shot an 83, while Gottstein a junior, shot the lowest round of all the TIMES NEWS area participants with an 81.

"I went into today just trying to shoot par for every hole," said Gottstein. "I had a rough start to the morning with back-to-back double bogeys but I gathered myself and I started to par holes, but I could of played better today. Next week I want to get off to a good start so I don't have to play from behind from the start."

Josh Green who is also a junior expressed his excitement of making it to the tournament, missing last year's event by just a couple strokes.

"I missed Districts by a couple strokes last year and I wanted to come out and play well," said Green. "I just have to stay consistent the whole way. I knew the ball wasn't going to fly around today, so I didn't want to play too aggressive.

Northwestern Lehigh also had two golfers qualify for the event. Cole Miller who did not have to play because of winning the Colonial League title and Nick Vecellio. The sophomore Vecellio shot an 83 for the day and will go back to the tournament for the second straight season.

"I practiced a lot during this off-season to get ready to perform at higher level of play this season," said Vecellio. "This is big for me to qualify for Districts and really helps my confidence going into Monday. The last half of the year was rough so I'm glad I got into the tournament."

Palmerton's Ben Andrews also qualified for the event and like Miller did not have to play. Andrews, who has been tearing up the links this year was a state tournament qualifier in 2010 so he automatically qualified for the event at Blue Ridge this upcoming Monday.
