Tamaqua couple wed 62 years

Edward and Dorothy Rummel of Tamaqua recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. They were married on Oct. 21, 1949.

Mr. Rummel was born and raised in Tamaqua. Mrs. Rummel is originally from Barnesville.

Mr. Rummel worked in the newspaper trade for 46 years, with 10 years at the Tamaqua Courier, six years at the Mahanoy City Record American, and 30 years at the Reading Eagle-Times in Reading.

Mrs. Rummel worked for several years at Sprite Manufacturing in Tamaqua.

Mr. Rummel served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a radio man on a tank in the 67th Tank Battalion, 2nd Armored Division.

He is also a retired Tamaqua firefighter, having served for 30 years, during which time he says he fought three of the town's worst fires. In two instances, he turned in the alarm while working at the local newspaper.

The Rummels have four children: daughter Susan of Tamaqua, and daughter Sandy of North Carolina, and son Donald of Hometown, and son Terry of Florida.

They also have eight grandchildren, four boys and four girls, and seven great-grandchildren, six girls and one boy.
