Northwestern girls sweep

The Northwestern girls posted a sweep in a multi-team cross country meet to highlight Thursday's scholastic sports results.

CROSS COUNTRY

Northern Lehigh-Northwestern-Catasauqua-Saucon Valley-Southern Lehigh-Palisades

The Northwestern girls' cross country team went a perfect 5-0 against their Colonial League competition.

Six Lady Tigers finished in the top ten. They were led by Emma Kemmerer in third place with a time of 20:55. Teammates Erica Sarnicky, Hailey Yost, Natalie Boehm, Rachele Cerrone and Lauren Alden also placed in the top ten. Sam Corcoran paced Northern Lehigh (2-3) in seventh.

Northwestern's Tyler Stelmack won the boys' event with a time of 17:01. Fellow Tiger Joe Duffy was the only other local to place in the top ten.

The Palmerton boys split a multi-team Colonial League meet. The Bombers beat Salisbury and Pen Argyl and lost to Notre Dame and Wilson.

The Palmerton girls did not have enough runners to field a complete team, but they did get a solid effort from Andrea Stevko, who finished in sixth place.

John Achtermann's 16th place finish led the Palmerton boys.

In a Mountain Valley Conference showdown, Pleasant Valley swept both East Stroudsburg South and East Stroudsburg North on Wednesday.

The Lady Bears scored identical 15-50 scores against the Cavaliers and Timberwolves. On the boys' side, PV ran away with a 15-50 win over the Timberwolves, but tip-toed past the Cavaliers for a 28-29 win.

Dana McAllister paced the Lady Bears by crossing the finish line first, while teammates Abby Kaspszyk, Kristen Ebeshardt and Stacy Wojy rounded out the top-five in second, third and fifth respectively.

Alex Larkin was the lone Bears to finish in the top five with a fifth-place finish.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Catasauqua-Lehighton

Lehighton swept Catasauqua, 25-9, 25-21, 25-18 in a non-league match.

Tiff Thompson led the Indians (1-1) with seven kills and two blocks. Teammate Dallas Seltzer added six kills, while Jackie Jordan tallied five aces and five kills.

Lehighton's JV also won, 22-25, 25-15, 15-13.

Weatherly-Hazleton

Weatherly started off strong, but couldn't hold on as Hazleton came from behind to score a 15-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 non-league victory on Wednesday.

Sarah Dolinsky paced the Wreckers with 23 digs, 10 kills and four aces, while Alicia Panzarella finished with 31 digs and four aces. Alyssa Miller added 17 digs, five kills and three aces.

In the JV game, Weatherly posted a 17-15, 15-13 win in straight games.

Pleasant Valley-Freedom

Freedom defeated Pleasant Valley, 25-12, 21-25, 25-10, 26-24 in a non-league match on Wednesday.

In the JV game, Freedom knocked off Pleasant Valley for a 25-22, 23-25, 15-9 win.

GOLF

Palmerton-Northwestern

Northwestern topped Palmerton in Colonial League golf action on Thursday, winning 197-242 in nine holes of play.

The Tigers' Cole Miller and the Bombers' Ben Andrews tied for the low-round on the day, as they each finished with a 34.

Fellow Tiger Mike D'Ancona was the only other golfer to shoot under 40. He finished with a 38.
