NL upsets Palisades in soccer

Northern Lehigh, Tamaqua and Lehighton all posted boys soccer victories to highlight Thursday's scholastic sports card.

BOYS SOCCER

No. Lehigh-Palisades

Northern Lehigh knocked Palisades from the unbeaten ranks in the Colonial League with a 1-0 victory.

The Bulldogs' Jimmy Bilger accounted for the game's lone goal 10 minutes into the second half.

The Bulldogs outshot the Pirates 12-3 on the day. NL's goalkeeper Allan Sipos recorded the shutout by grabbing all three shots he faced.

Northern Lehigh improves to 4-5 overall (4-5 CL), while Palisades slips to 7-1-1 overall (5-1-1 CL).

N'western-Salisbury

Northwestern dropped a 2-1 Colonial League setback to Salisbury.

The Falcons' received a first half goal on a own goal, while Sean Adams later scored in the second half off a Austin Uhl's assist to seal the victory.

Jeremy Ettl scored the Tigers' lone goal of the game in the first half.

Talon Williams grabbed 15 saves between the Northwestern's posts.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Jake Fegley scored with 6:31 left into the overtime period to lift Tamaqua to a 2-1 win over visiting Pine Grove.

Cole Schwalm gave the Cardinals the lead with a first half goal.

The Blue Raiders' Josh Delp tied things up at 1-1 with 3:08 left in the second and was later credited with the assist on the game-winning goal.

Tyler Cimino recorded seven saves between the Tamaqua posts.

Hazleton-Lehighton

The Tribe earned a 3-1 non-league win over Hazelton.

Anthony Rossino scored twice for the Indians (2-6). Josh Eckert scored the other Lehighton goal off an assist from Rossino.

Lehighton held a 21-12 shot advantage.

The Indians also won the JV game, 5-0.

GIRLS SOCCER

Sch. Haven-Jim Thorpe

Schuylkill Haven posted a 4-3 Schuylkill League Division I win over Jim Thorpe.

Kristen Lawrence paced the Olympians' attack with two goals while Chelsea Smelas chipped in with a single score.

Olympian goalkeeper Alyssa Smith finished with 10 saves.

GIRLS TENNIS

Notre Dame (ES)-Jim Thorpe

Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg earned a 4-1 victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Olympians pair of Carly Marzen and Gabby Kline prevented the shutout winning the No. 1 doubles match.

Jim Thorpe slips to 3-8 on the season.

Tamaqua cruised to a 4-1 win over Freeland MMI.

The Blue Raiders' Taylor Urban and Vicky Krouse as well as Emily Hansler and Laine Confer swept doubles' play in the victory.

Carly Fenstermacher and Sarah Zoba finished things off with singles' wins.

Lehighton was a winner over Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua in non-league action. The Indians downed the Blue Raiders, 14.5-9.5, and the Olympians, 19-5.

Alden Everett earned medalist honors as he shot a 82 to lead the Indians.

Marian picked up Schuylkill League wins over both Minersville and Schuylkill Haven.

The Colts shot a 312 and were led by Mike Gottstein's 72. Marian's Mark Postupack also had a nice round with a 77.

With the win, Marian improves to 11-2 overall, 11-0 in the league.

In a Mountain Valley Conference tri-meet at Pocono Mountain East, the Lehighton boys' managed a split while the Lady Indians were swept.

The Indians were paced by Dalton Radler, who crossed the finish line in fourth.

Lehighton's Jenny Beers was 42 seconds away from a first-place finish in the girls' meet. She finished in second place in a time of 24:09.

Lehighton-PM East

Lehighton scored a 2-1 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Pocono Mountain East in a game that was officially called with four minutes left due to rain.

Sage Terembula and Gwen Remaley scored the Indians' two goals, while Kaycie Andrew was credited with an assist.

Kristina Schnell finished with nine saves in front of the Indians' cage.

Lehighton moves to 4-3-1 overall (3-2-1 MVC), while East falls to 4-4 (2-2 MVC).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Pottsville-Panther Vy.

The Lady Panthers won in straight games over the Crimson Tide, 25-18, 25-12, 25-20, in Schuylkill League action.

The Panthers got tremendous balance as Chrissy Michalik (12 assists, 12 kills); Deanna Focht (10 kills, six blocks); Amy Yesella (10 kills, three blocks , 10 digs); Steph Kachelries (six aces, 12 digs); and Jacinda Ruzicka (11 service points) all had strong matches.

Tamaqua-Sch. Haven

Tamaqua swept Schuylkill Haven, 25-23, 25-16, 25-20, in a Schuylkill League match.

For the Raiders, Sarah Paluck had four kills and two digs, Jordan Raebold had two kills, and Jackie McMullen added eight service points.

Haven pulled out the JV game, 2-1.

Jim Thorpe-Halifax

Halifax swept Jim Thorpe, 25-12, 25-20, 25-5, in Schuylkill League action.

Jocelyn DeMarco had a strong match at the service line for the Olympians with four aces. Riley Carroll (two assists, two digs) and Amanda Petrin (five digs) also played well for Thorpe.

Jim Thorpe won the JV match, 8-25, 25-22, 15-12

Williams Vy.-Marian

The Fillies breezed to a Schuylkill League win over Williams Valley, 25-5, 25-4, 25-15.

Marykate Sherkness led the Fillies with 16 kills and two aces. Also playing well for Marian were Nikki Collevecchio (five aces, five digs) and Abby O'Donnell (25 assists, two aces).

Marian also won the JV contest, 25-10, 25-11.

Tri-Valley-Weatherly

Tri-Valley pulled off a straight-set win over host Weatherly, 25-8, 25-17, 25-13.

Individually for the Lady Wreckers, Sara Dolinsky had five kills, 12 digs and five blocks; Alyssa Miller had four kills and seven digs; and Alicia Panzarella had 35 digs.

Tri-Valley also won the JV game, 25-16, 25-18.
