Sorority news
Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Sept. 14 at the home of Patti Confer. Following the business session, Fred Confer presented a tutorial demonstration on creating and baking apple pies.
During the business session, topics of discussion included information on personalized cake pans; a pancake breakfast; and a fall social.
The next regular meeting will be held Sept. 28, at 7 p.m., at the home of Donna Sterling, Lake Hauto
Democrats to meet
The Eastern Schuylkill Democrats will meet Monday, at 7:30 p.m., at the East End Fire Company in Tamaqua. The public is welcome to attend.
Preventing a fall
Diakon Services will sponsor a free Fall Prevention Workshop on Sept. 28 at the Tamaqua Salvation Army. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is targeted towards individuals age 50 and older.
The Salvation Army is located at 105 W. Broad St., Tamaqua.

Band festival
The 15th Annual Land of the Running Water Marching Band Adjudication, hosted by the Tamaqua Area Raider Marching Band, will be held Sept. 24 at the Tamaqua High School Sports Stadium. This year's event will feature a dozen participating local high school marching bands; including Bangor, Emmaus, Exeter Township, Hamburg, Mahanoy Area, Minersville, Panther Valley, Pottsville Area, Southern Lehigh, Tri Valley, Williams Valley and Wilson.
Gates will open at 5 p.m.and the competition will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Zion Lewistown
The Rev. Sunny Stock will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.
Activities for next week will include: Monday, Consistory meeting at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, fundraiser meting at 6:30 p.m and preschool meeting at 7:30 p.m.
St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the Allegro Bell Choir will rehearse at noon.
Activities for next week include: Thursday, Chime rehearsal at 5:30 p.m., Angel Choir rehearsal at 6 p.m., Shepherd Choir meets at 6:30 p.m. and Chancel/Adult Choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, garden maintenance will be done between 8 a.m. and noon.
