Garden club news
The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met March 27 with President Kathy McGee in charge of the business session. The theme was "Hats Off to Flowers."
Using a hat as a container for the arrangement category, winners were Evelyn Adams, first place; June Leiby, second place; and Mary Bridygham, third place. For the specimen category, using a forced branch, Bridygham was awarded first place and Kay Ann Rottet earned second place.
Members were invited to attend the South Schuylkill Garden Club Tea on April 17. The event will be held at the Friedensburg Fire Company. Reservations are required and may be made by calling (570) 467-3400.
The Lewistown Club's annual tea is scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 26 in the social hall of Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Members are reminded to bring tea cups, finger sandwiches and desserts. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the aforementioned number. Set up for the tea will be held at 6:30 p.m. on April 25. Volunteers will be needed.
Following the business session, members engaged in a plant exchange, discussing the various plants brought in by members.
Volunteers will be needed to plant flowers at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds at a later date.
Student recognition
The Tamaqua Area School District Administration has decided to discontinue the dinner portion of the annual Student Recognition program. The dinner/awards ceremony had been scheduled for May 14 at the Tamaqua Area Elementary School. The tradition had been going strong for the past 53 years.
Organizers regretfully made the announcement and thanked the public for their years of support.
Class of 1992
The Tamaqua Area High School Class of 1992 is planning its 10th anniversary reunion and organizers are in need of contact information for several classmates.
Among the "missing" are Sherri Erbe, Justin Motz, Anthony Moyer, Constance Murphy, Philip Navitsky, Michele Smith and Roger Wagner.

SS. Peter and Paul
The Holy Week schedule for SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will include: Wednesday, Mass and Holy Communion at 8 a.m., Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m.; Holy Thursday, Sacrament of Reconciliation from 4-4:30 p.m., Mass of the Lord's Supper 7 p.m., followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation; Good Friday, celebration of the Lord's Passion at 3 p.m., followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which will also be held from 7-7:30 p.m.; Saturday Easter Vigil, blessing of baskets at 1 p.m., liturgy at 8 p.m. followed by High Mass; Easter Sunday, Masses at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
The parish Holy Name Society will meet at 8 p.m. this Thursday.
St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this Easter Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Maundy Thursday services, with communion, will be held at 7 p.m. The service will include First Holy Communion for Kyla Elizabeth Kerr, Hannah Grace Kistler and Sarah Alexis Martinez.
A Service of Darkness will be held at 7 p.m. on April 6, Good Friday.
Activities for next week include: Tuesday, church council will meet at 7 p.m.; Thursday, Angel Choir rehearsal at 6 p.m., Shepherd Choir meets at 6:30 p.m., Chancel/Adult Choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m.
A handbell workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on April 21. Anyone interested in learning how the handbells work is welcome to attend.
