Updike named SEC Freshman of the Week

Georgia freshman Allison Updike has been named the Southeastern Conference Women's Freshman of the Week following her performance at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, according to an announcement from the league office.

Updike, a Nesquehoning native, launched her third attempt in the javelin 152 feet, 6 inches on Saturday to pick up her second consecutive collegiate victory to start her career. Updike passed the second-place finisher by 23 feet and has the second-longest throw in the SEC this year at 156 feet (No. 26 nationally).

The former junior national champion is competing for the first season for the Georgia women. Updike won a PIAA gold medal as a junior but suffered a knee injury during her senior year at Tamaqua High School.

Georgia travels to Gainesville, Fla., for the Florida Relays starting on Friday and running through Saturday.

NFL to hear appeal by Saints brass Thursday

Saints head coach Sean Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis and assistant head coach Joe Vitt are set to have their NFL appeals heard Thursday regarding the punishment they've received for their roles in New Orleans' bounty system.

League spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the hearing schedule in an email to The Associated Press.

Aiello also said former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who has since taken a job as defensive coordinator with the St. Louis Rams, did not appeal his indefinite suspension.

Red Sox closer will have surgery on thumb

Boston Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey will have surgery on his right thumb that could sideline him for a significant portion of the season.

The Red Sox said their new closer was examined Monday in Boston by Drs. Mark Belsky and Matthew Leibman, then was examined again Tuesday in Cleveland by Dr. Thomas Graham.

Washington guard enters NBA draft

Washington guard Tony Wroten announced he will declare for the NBA draft and hire an agent, ending his collegiate career after one season.
