Tigers rally to post baseball victory

Northwestern's comeback victory over Saucon Valley in baseball highlighted Thursday scholastic sports action.

BASEBALL

Northwestern-Saucon Vy.

Matt Maher had a big day at the plate to help spark Northwestern to a 6-4 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Maher finished 3-for-4 with three singles and four RBIs. Teammate Austin Kelly also finished 3-for-4 with three singles.

Kevin Schreder paced the Panthers (4-9, 3-7) with three singles and two RBIs.

Northwestern improves to 10-5 overall and 6-5 in the CL.

Pleasant Valley-ES South

East Stroudsburg South picked up a 5-2 Mountain Valley Conference win over visiting Pleasant Valley.

The Bears' Dan Hrbek led off the game with a solo home run and then followed with three consecutive singles to finish a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Hrbek scored both of PV runs.

Adrian Concepion added a single and a double for the Bears (7-7 overall; 5-3 MVC).

Dan Alicea led the Cavaliers (6-7; 4-3) with two singles and a run scored.

SOFTBALL

Northwestern-Saucon Vy.

Saucon Valley used the long ball to post a 12-2 Colonial League win over visiting Northwestern.

The Panthers' Karine Polgar finished with two solo home runs while Kelley Shreder added a two-run homer.

Lauren Horner paced the Tigers with a double and a run scored.

Northwestern falls to 8-3 in the league and two games behind North Division leader Pen Argyl. Saucon Valley improves to 9-2.

Panther Vy.-Tri-Valley

Tri Valley only needed three innings to score a 15-0 Schuylkill League victory over visiting Panther Valley.

Morganne Starr sparked the Bulldogs' offense with two home runs, two runs scored and three RBIs. Teammate Juli Weber added a grand slam, a single, three runs scored and four RBIs.

Amy Yusella recorded the Panthers' lone hit off of winning pitcher Arissa Deibert.

Panther Valley slips to 0-13 on the season.

Southern Lehigh blanked Northern Lehigh for a 5-0 Colonial League win.

Katie Tankred backed a winning pitching performance in which she tossed a two-hitter with two singles and a RBI at the plate.

Shannon Weil and Cassie Toth recorded the Bulldogs' lone hits.

Northern Lehigh slips to 4-9 overall and 3-8 in the CL. Southern Lehigh moves to 6-9 overall and 5-6 in the league.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lehighton-ES South

Nicole Barrett's goal was enough to lift East Stroudsburg South to a 1-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over visiting Lehighton.

Barrett scored on an unassisted goal for the Cavaliers with 35:24 left in the first half.

The Cavaliers outshot the Indians 18-3.

The Indians' keeper Kayla Troutman grabbed 12 saves.

JV BASEBALL

Marian-Freeland MMI

Marian post a 10-0 win against Freeland MMI.

Anthony Agosti, Frank Nietz and Phil DeSantis all had two hits for the Colts.

Logan Mehalshick picked up the win on the mound.

Marian-Crestwood

Marian rallied late for a 6-4 victory over Crestwood.

Pat Merkle and Luke Stawick led the Marian attack with two hits apiece.

Logan Mehalshick earned his second win of the season while Luke Stawick got the save.

Marian-Panther Vy.

Jake Stano singled home Jake Szczecina with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Panther Valley a 13-12 win over Marian.

Stano had three hits and Szczecina added two for the Panthers. Kyle Ferryman had a three-run double.

For Marian, Justin Bilka, Erick Swankoski, and Luke Stawick all had doubles.

Panther Vy.-Marian

Panther Valley defeated Marian, 10-5.

Jake Szczecina led the Panthers with a double and two singles

Erick Swankoski had three doubles for Marian.

Marian-Mahanoy Area

Kyle Rogers' walk off home run gave Marian a 9-8 victory over Mahanoy Area.

The Colts rallied from a seven-run deficit thanks to a big game from Rogers, who added a double and a single in addition to his home run. Anthony Agosti and Luke Williams both chipped in two hits.

Mehalshick picked up the win in relief.

Marian-Hazleton

Marian edged Hazleton, 4-2.

Luke Stawick got the complete-game pitching victory, striking out seven.

Frank Nietz and Stawick both had two hits and an RBI for the Colts.
