Freshman orientation
Stephen Toth, Tamaqua Senior High School principal, has announced that orientation for freshmen and students new to the district will be held Aug. 9. The session will begin at 6:30 p.m., in the district auditorium, located between the senior high and middle schools.
Parents and students are welcome to attend.
While tours of the building will not be conducted that evening, they are available by appointment by calling (570) 668-1901, between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
Cross country
The Tamaqua Cross Country Boosters will meet at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8, at the Hometown Fire Company. The group will finalize plans for a car wash, which will be held immediately following the meeting. All team members, parents, and adults interested in supporting the teams, are welcome to attend.
Practice will begin on Aug. 13. Students in grades nine through 12 are to meet at 8 a.m. at the steps in front of the senior high school. The entire team will meet later that day, at 6 p.m., also on the school steps.
A team picnic will be held Aug. 19, from 1-5 p.m., at Lake Hauto. For more information, or directions, contact Sara Tite at (570) 645-3117.
Middle school news
Christopher Czapla, principal of the Tamaqua Area Middle School, has announced an orientation session will be held Aug. 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Parents of sixth graders, as well as seventh and eighth graders new to the district, are welcome to attend.
Information will be presented on student schedules, activities, facilities and discipline.
Individuals will meet in the school district auditorium, then have the opportunity to hear a special presentation on "cyberbullying" from Janene Holter of the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
Tours of the building will also be offered.
Homeroom assignments will be posted on the school's front/main door as of Aug. 2.
Trinity UCC
The Rev. Thomas Reinsel will officiate at the 10 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Trinity United Church of Christ. The service will include closing ceremonies for vacation Bible school.

St. Peter's Union
The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include Holy Communion. Summer Sunday school will meet at 10:15 a.m.
Retirees will meet at 10 a.m. next Wednesday and the prayer group will meet at 4:45 p.m. Thursday.
Zion Lewistown
The Rev. Sunny Stock will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will meet at 9:30 a.m.
All young people, age 10 and older, are welcome to attend the Calvary Youth meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday. The meeting will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle on Valley Road.
First Methodist
The Rev. James Cavallero will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in First United Methodist Church. The service will include Holy Communion.
Children's Sunday school will be held following the service.
Also on Sunday, Rev. Cavallero will present a slide show of photos from his recent trip to Alaska, followed by the showing of the film "Amazing Grace." The slide show will be at 6:15 p.m. and the movie will begin at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
Activities for next week will include: Monday, trustees meet at 6 p.m. and the administrative council will meet at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, quilters meet at 9:30 a.m.
Zion Lutheran
The Rev. Jeffrey Kistler will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The service will be followed by a coffee fellowship.
Also on Sunday, Girl Scout leaders will meet at 6 p.m.
Activities for next week will include: Monday, blanket ministry will meet at 9 a.m., restoration task force meets at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, property committee meets at 6 p.m., finance committee meets at 7:30 p.m.
