The Western Poconos are nice to visit. Just don't enter a bears den when the bears aren't hibernating.

Lehighton girls' basketball team entered a bear's den last night, the den of the Lady Bears of Pleasant Valley.

The result was a 49-7 thrashing of the visitors.

PV jumped into a 10-2 lead within the first three minutes and for most of the game just kept building on that lead. At the end of the quarter, the scoreboard read 21-3. By the half, PV had a 37-5 lead. The mercy rule went into effect very early in the second half.

It was a pleasant seniors' night for the Lady Bears.

Nadia Gauronsky, third year coach for PV, said two early three pointers in the opening minutes were a trigger to the easy win.

"I think we had confidence going into tonight," she said. "It was Senior Night so they were a little more peppy."

She added, "We shot good right from the start with those three pointers building confidence."

The Bears, 12-6 and 7-2 in the Mountain Valley Conference, shot 50 percent from the floor for the night, hitting 22 of 44 field goal attempts. In the first half, they made 16 of 32 shots from the floor.

Obviously Indian coach Ray Bressi was disappointed.

"We've been playing better," he said. "We had a pretty good weekend. We're better than this. I know they're a better team than we were tonight. We're a better team and we've got to move on."

He gave Pleasant Valley credit, stating the Bears are a better team and "they shot the ball well."

The Indians, 2-15 overall, shot three for 15 from the floor, including two for 10 in the first half.

Both teams substituted frequently.

The top scorer for the night was Kori Dekmer of PV with 10 points, all in the first half, including two first-quarter three-pointers.

Jordan Meckes had nine for the Lady Bears, with seven of them in the first quarter.

Neither team put any points up in the fourth period. For the first five minutes of the last quarter, there was only one shot from the floor, and that was a miss by Lehighton.
